Spots in Australia

Sydney

New South Wales · Coastal walk, Surfing · Best time: Oct–Mar

City and ocean mesh like almost nowhere else: waves at Bondi or Manly in the morning, clifftop paths towards Coogee after, laps in an ocean pool at night. East-coast swells serve up something rideable most days — board rental right on the beach. Bondi to Coogee Walk — 6 km along the cliff edge, free.

Melbourne

Victoria · Great Ocean Road, Surfing · Best time: Oct–Mar

A sport-obsessed city with a raw south coast on its doorstep: along the Great Ocean Road, surf classics like Bells Beach line up next to rainforest trails and lookout cliffs. Take your time and a thicker wetsuit — the Southern Ocean is cold but consistent. Great Ocean Road in 2 days — overnight in Apollo Bay.

Gold Coast

Queensland · Surfing, Theme parks · Best time: Year-round

Seventy kilometres of sand with some of the longest point breaks on the planet: between Snapper Rocks and Burleigh, east swells peel for several hundred metres. Crowds are a given — but with dozens of peaks you'll almost always find an open shoulder. Snapper Rocks for long pointbreak waves.

Byron Bay

New South Wales · Surfing, Yoga · Best time: Year-round

Australia's longboard capital: The Pass peels long, forgiving rights over the sandbar — ideal for your first green waves. Add yoga decks, the lighthouse trail to the mainland's easternmost point, and whales offshore through the winter months. The Pass — perfect beginner spot at sunrise.

Cairns

Queensland · Snorkeling, Scuba Diving · Best time: Year-round

The gateway to the Great Barrier Reef: day boats and liveaboards take you to outer reefs with turtles, reef sharks and intact coral gardens. Intro dives need no licence — and once you're hooked, add a liveaboard run to the Ribbon Reefs. Reef tours from ~150 AUD — book early.

Uluru

Northern Territory · Hiking, Sunset · Best time: Apr–Sep

The Red Centre at its purest: the Base Walk loops you all the way around the monolith, and the Valley of the Winds waits in nearby Kata Tjuta. Start at sunrise with plenty of water — sections close in extreme heat. Base Walk (10 km) more rewarding than the climb (banned).

Perth

Western Australia · Surfing, Hiking · Best time: Oct–Mar

A relaxed west-coast metropolis with uncrowded line-ups: city breaks at Trigg and Scarborough, Rottnest Island for a bike-and-snorkel day, and the world-class Margaret River region down south. The Fremantle Doctor blows in every afternoon — plan your sessions early. Margaret River for wine and waves.

Halls Gap (Grampians)

Victoria · Bouldering, Climbing, Hiking

Halls Gap is the base in Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, where Parks Victoria permits climbing and bouldering only inside designated areas — climbing beyond them is not allowed. Open areas include Andersens West with 14 named boulders, Taipan Wall (northern section only, via agreed alternate access points), Grey and Green Walls via Central Buttress, and Summer Day Valley, the latter only through licensed tour operators. Spurt Wall, Tortoise Wall (since April 2026), Mountain Lion (since December 2023) and the northern part of Centurion Walls are closed. Chalk should be minimised and coloured to match the rock; fixed bolts are allowed inside the designated areas but not in the buffer zones protecting cultural and environmental values. A free online climbing permit is in development and will then be mandatory for all climbers. Open the current Parks Victoria list of designated areas before you drive out: closures such as Tortoise Wall were added at short notice, and climbing outside the designated areas is not permitted.

Katoomba (Blue Mountains)

New South Wales · Trail Running, Hiking · Best time: Mar–Nov

Ultra-Trail Australia starts in Katoomba inside Blue Mountains National Park, part of the World Heritage-listed Greater Blue Mountains Area. Distances: 161.1 km with 7,200 m of ascent, 101 km with 4,400 m, 51 km with 2,400 m, 22 km with 1,200 m and 11.4 km with 731 m — a half-day target through to a miler on one weekend. The park carries over 140 km of tracks and trails and is always open, but can close at short notice in poor weather or high fire danger. 2027 dates: 13–16 May. The park can close at short notice in bad weather or high fire danger, so check the current alerts on nationalparks.nsw.gov.au before every drive up.

Airlie Beach (Whitsundays)

Whitsunday Islands, Queensland · Sailing, Snorkeling, Island hopping

Mainland base for the 74 Whitsunday Islands: Coral Sea Marina at Airlie Beach holds 520 wet berths for vessels from 11 to 80 m. Bareboat charters leave from here or from Hamilton Island — Tourism Whitsundays states no formal qualifications are required; instead every boat gets a safety and area briefing before departure, followed by daily weather updates and radio check-ins from the base. Hamilton Island Race Week runs each August, most recently 15–22 August 2026, its 41st edition. Chartering without a licence does not mean without instruction: keep your arrival day free for the onboard briefing and actually take the base's daily radio check-in afterwards.

Perisher

New South Wales / Snowy Mountains · Snowboarding, Freestyle, Skiing · Best time: Jun–Oct

1,245 ha of skiable terrain between 1,605 m and 2,054 m; the operator states 355 m of vertical drop, but 45 lifts with a combined capacity of 53,990 people per hour. The operator states just 355 m of vertical drop, so plan across the area rather than for long descents: work through the four terrain parks and take in night riding on a Tuesday or Saturday.

Hobart

Tasmanien · Running, Hiking · Best time: Nov–Mar

A half marathon that goes almost entirely uphill: the Point to Pinnacle starts at the Wrest Point car park in Sandy Bay and finishes after 21.1 km and 1,271 metres of climb at the summit of kunanyi/Mount Wellington. It is run on road, on 15 November in 2026. Walkers start at 7am with a 4:40 limit, runners at 8am with 3:40. Intermediate cut-offs sit at the Southern Outlet (8:40am) and Pillinger Drive (9:40am), with a final cut-off at 11:40am. Sydney Park Skate Park
