Wallonien · Kayaking, MTB, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Oct
Belgium's green sporting backcountry: paddle the meandering Lesse down between crags and castles, ride MTB loops through deep forest and hike ridgelines with river views. Perfect for an active weekend out of Brussels or Cologne. Kayak on the Lesse (21 km) — perfect day trip.
Flandern · Kitesurfing, SUP, Cycling · Best time: Apr–Oct
A North Sea breeze, Belgian style: wide sandy beaches for kiters, sheltered stretches for SUP and a bike network running the entire coastline — with the coastal tram to carry you back to your starting point. Flat, windy, dependable. Take the coastal tram (68 km) to trailhead — bike back.
Westflandern · Kayaking, Cycling · Best time: Apr–Oct
World Heritage at paddling pace: glide the canals beneath medieval gables before the city properly wakes, then roll out along the canal to Damme into flat polder country. Culture and base training in one. Kayak tour mornings — fewer tourist boats, calm water.
Lüttich · Hiking, Cross-country skiing · Best time: Year-round
High-moor wilderness on boardwalks: you hike across open heath and bog whose mist and emptiness feel almost Scandinavian. When snow falls, the tracks become one of the Benelux's few cross-country skiing grounds — Belgium's rooftop sits right next door. Signal de Botrange (694m) — Belgium's highest point. Yes, really.
Namur · Kayaking, Climbing · Best time: Apr–Oct
Limestone crags above the Meuse: at Dinant you paddle mellow river kilometres between cliffs and the citadel — while Belgium's climbing scene has hung on the walls of Freyr for generations. Sport and river romance mix here by the hour. Kayak Dinant-Anseremme (12 km) — 3h on calm water.
Limburg · Hiking, MTB, Cycling · Best time: Apr–Oct
Belgium's first national park: 12,000 hectares of heathland and pine forest with around 200 km of hiking trails and 160 km of signposted MTB loops on the junction network. It's anything but flat — the old mining spoil heaps serve up short, punchy climbs with views over the Meuse valley. In late August the Mechelse Heide heath blooms purple — start early in the morning and the trails are all yours.
Hennegau · Sailing, Windsurfing, Scuba Diving · Best time: May–Sep
Five reservoirs that together form Belgium's biggest stretch of water: sailing and windsurfing schools, SUP, kayaking and a dive spot up to 40 m deep at Lac de la Plate Taille. Perfect for learning a watersport from scratch — everything in one place, everything rentable. At Lac de la Plate Taille divers can go down to 40 m — complete with an underwater training course.
Provinz Luxemburg · Kayaking, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Sep
The Semois meanders here in huge loops through wooded Ardennes slopes — you paddle anywhere from 4 to 20 km of mellow flatwater, launching practically below Bouillon castle. Add hiking trails up to the viewpoints above the river bends: easy on the legs, spectacular on the eyes. The Tombeau du Géant viewpoint near Botassart overlooks the most beautiful Semois meander — the perfect hiking goal after your paddle.
Provinz Luxemburg · Via Ferrata, Kayaking, Zipline · Best time: Apr–Oct
An outdoor base camp on the Ourthe: four via ferrata routes right above the river, kayak runs of 8, 12 or 23 km, and Belgium's biggest adventure park with a mega zipline on top. Perfect if you want to stack several sports into one weekend without changing base. Four via ferrata routes up to 35 m above the Ourthe — the easiest one works even with zero climbing experience.
