Spots in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Mostar / Neretva

Herzegowina · Rafting, Kayaking, Canyoning · Best time: Apr–Oct

The emerald Neretva is Bosnia's whitewater artery: rafting and kayak sections for different levels, plus canyoning in the side valleys. And in the middle of it all, Mostar with its world-famous bridge — sport and history in one trip. Cliff jumping from Stari Most — only for the brave (20m!).

Sarajevo

Kanton Sarajevo · Hiking, Skiing, MTB · Best time: Year-round

The 1984 Olympic city with mountains on its doorstep: the cable car puts you on Trebević in minutes, and in winter you ski Bjelašnica and Jahorina. Few capitals get you from café to summit faster. Trebević cable car + hike — former Olympic bobsled track.

Blagaj / Buna

Herzegowina · Kayaking, Rafting · Best time: Apr–Oct

At the Buna spring an entire river bursts fully formed from the cliff — ice-cold, glass-clear, unreal turquoise. The short run towards the Neretva is a relaxed paddle past villages and greenery; the dervish monastery at the source is the bonus. Kayak on the Buna spring — surreally turquoise water.

Kravica Wasserfall

Herzegowina · Swimming, Hiking · Best time: Jun–Sep

A broad arc of waterfalls a good 25 metres high with a natural pool below — in summer you swim right up to the falling water. Short bankside paths and picnic meadows turn it into a perfect active swim day. Before 10am — after that tourist buses arrive.

Una Nationalpark

Una-Sana · Rafting, Kayaking · Best time: Apr–Oct

The Una ranks among the most beautiful rivers in the Balkans: turquoise cascades, travertine waterfalls and rafting stretches that challenge beginners without overwhelming them. If you want more, sportier sections wait upstream. Una rafting from Martin Brod — Class II-III, perfect for families.

Foča / Tara-Schlucht

Republika Srpska · Rafting, Whitewater, Kayaking · Best time: Apr–Oct

The Tara rolls in from Montenegro through Europe's deepest canyon and throws class II–IV rapids at you one after another before Šćepan Polje. From the rafting camps around Foča you're in safe hands with a guide even with zero experience — the water is so clear they call it the "Tear of Europe". Want more? Add a kayak day on the Drina. The wildest rapids sit in the final 18 km from Brštanovica — exactly the stretch the day trips from Foča run.

Banja Luka / Vrbas-Schlucht

Republika Srpska · Rafting, Canyoning, Kayaking · Best time: Apr–Oct

The Vrbas hosted the 2009 World Rafting Championship, and the run through the narrow, 300-metre-deep Tijesno canyon is still just as punchy. Around 31 kilometres of whitewater, plus canyoning in the side gorges and mellower kayak sections — all fifteen minutes from Banja Luka. Perfect if you want city and river in one day. The Tijesno canyon starts just about 12 kilometres south of the city centre — 2009 World Rafting Championship course included.

Jahorina

Republika Srpska · Skiing, Snowboarding, Hiking · Best time: Dec–Mar

In 1984 the Olympic women raced for medals on Jahorina; today you carve around 47 kilometres of pistes through spruce forest — 20 km of them easy, ideal for learning. Prices are a fraction of what you know from the Alps, and Sarajevo is barely half an hour away. In summer, hikers take over the slopes. The women's alpine events of the 1984 Olympics ran here — the 2 km "Olimpijski spust" is the original course.

Sutjeska Nationalpark

Republika Srpska · Hiking, Trekking, Mountaineering · Best time: Jun–Sep

Bosnia's top-tier trekking: from the Prijevor saddle you climb Maglić, at 2,386 metres the country's highest peak, overlooking heart-shaped Lake Trnovačko. Add the Zelengora high plateaus with their glacial lakes and the Perućica primeval forest — one of Europe's last, with the nearly 100-metre Skakavac waterfall. Instead of crowds, you share the trails with bears and wolves. You can only enter the Perućica primeval forest accompanied by a park ranger — register at the park office in Tjentište first.

Lukomir / Rakitnica-Schlucht

Herzegowina-Neretva · Hiking, Trekking · Best time: Jun–Sep

Bosnia's highest village clings to the rim of the Rakitnica canyon at 1,495 metres, and the walk there across the Bjelašnica highlands is the country's most popular day hike. From Umoljani you follow old shepherd paths while below you the Rakitnica cuts a 26-kilometre gorge between Bjelašnica and Visočica. Stone houses, sheep's cheese, barely changed in 600 years — which is exactly why you go. In winter Lukomir can only be reached on skis or on foot — the villagers move down to the valley.
