Spots in Bulgaria

Rila-Gebirge

Sofia · Hiking, Trekking · Best time: Jun–Sep

The roof of the Balkans: in the Rila range you climb to the Seven Lakes, cross grassy ridges far above the treeline and top out on Musala, the peninsula's highest point. Mountain huts keep even multi-day tours uncomplicated. Cable car up, walk down — saves 2h of ascent.

Bansko

Blagoevgrad · Skiing, Snowboarding · Best time: Dec–Mar

Skiing at a fraction of Alpine prices: Bansko combines modern lifts and long forest descents on the edge of the UNESCO-listed Pirin National Park with an old town full of taverns. Start early after fresh snow — the slopes below Todorka get tracked out fast. Midweek skiing — half as crowded, same slopes.

Plovdiv

Plovdiv · Hiking, Cycling, Running · Best time: Apr–Oct

One of Europe's oldest cities as a training ground: run across the seven hills and past the Roman stadium, ride the banks of the Maritsa and add day trips to clifftop fortresses in the Rhodopes. Culture breaks are part of the plan here. Asen Fortress day trip (40 min) — spectacular cliff hike.

Pirin-Gebirge

Blagoevgrad · Trekking, Hiking, Skiing · Best time: Jun–Sep

Granite and marble above dark cirque lakes: in the Pirin you cross sharp ridges like the notorious Koncheto, collect summits around Vihren and sleep in simple huts. A raw, concentrated high range packed into a small area. Vihren (2,914m) — Bulgaria's second highest peak, doable in a day.

Sozopol / Schwarzmeerküste

Burgas · Kayaking, Snorkeling, Sailing · Best time: May–Sep

A Black Sea old town on a rocky peninsula: paddle beneath timber houses and old town walls, snorkel rocky ground with mussel beds and sail the wide bay of Burgas. Loveliest outside the August rush. Kayak around the old town peninsula — surreal at sunset.

Borovets

Sofia · Skiing, Snowboarding, MTB · Best time: Dec–Apr

Bulgaria's oldest ski resort: 58 km of pistes across three sectors up to 2,550 m, from wide forest runs to the long Yastrebets descent. In summer the country's biggest bike park takes over — 20+ km of trails and a downhill with a 440 m vertical drop. Still a fraction of Alpine prices. Just over an hour from Sofia — go midweek, at weekends the whole capital shows up.

Pamporovo

Smolyan · Skiing, Cross-country skiing, Snowboarding · Best time: Dec–Apr

If you want to learn to ski without emptying your account: gentle, wide pistes through spruce forest in the Rhodopes, 55 km of runs in total. Add 38 km of cross-country tracks between the villages — and ski instructors among the cheapest in Europe. With around 270 days of sunshine a year it's Bulgaria's sunniest ski resort — pack sunscreen.

Vratsata-Schlucht

Vratsa · Climbing, Cave tours, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Oct

Bulgaria's biggest climbing area: limestone walls at the narrowest point of the gorge, around 250 single-pitch sport routes plus trad and multi-pitch classics up to the 350 m Central Wall. On rest days the Ledenika show cave is right around the corner. The guidebook lists over 580 routes — the 350-metre Central Wall is the longest wall in Bulgaria.

Zentralbalkan-Nationalpark

Lovech/Gabrovo · Trekking, Hiking, Trail Running · Best time: Jun–Sep

The main Balkan ridge at its rawest: open grassy crests, plenty of wind and 2,376 m Botev Peak as a long day objective. Want more? Tack on stages of the 650 km Kom–Emine long-distance trail — hut trekking without the crowds, but with proper weather-exposed ridges. Below Botev Peak hides Raysko Praskalo — at 124 m the highest waterfall in the Balkans.

Kresna-Schlucht (Struma)

Blagoevgrad · Rafting, Kayaking, Whitewater · Best time: Apr–Sep

Bulgaria's whitewater home turf: about 12 km of rafting through the narrow Kresna Gorge on the Struma, class II–IV. Properly punchy on spring meltwater, mellow enough in summer for your very first rafting trip — guided runs depart daily from March to November. In spring the Struma runs highest on meltwater — if you prefer it mellow, come in July for family season.
