Santiago's home turf in the Andes: an hour or so out of the city puts you in the canyon — rafting the Maipo, hikes to glaciers and the El Yeso reservoir, plus sport climbing on solid walls. Punta de Lobos is protected as a World Surfing Reserve — a long left that takes on big-wave scale when the swell pumps. Closer to town the waves break far more kindly, with plenty of schools. Región Metropolitana · Skiing · Best time: Jun–Sep
A ski area with a 3,000-metre base an hour and a half above Santiago: dry snow, wide slopes above the treeline and a reliable southern-winter season. Linked with neighbouring El Colorado and La Parva, the terrain grows considerably. Ski training in July? This is the place. The Andes' largest ski area — season Jun–Sep.

Granite big walls above a roadless valley: you hike in for four to five hours with your gear, and the climbing is trad on long routes — the Yosemite comparisons are no accident.
