Alajuela · Rafting, Zipline, Hiking · Best time: Year-round

The rivers run all year, and in the rainy season the rafting gets even punchier. Afterwards you recover in volcanically heated hot springs. Pacuare River rafting (Class III-IV) — Costa Rica's best rafting.
Puntarenas · Trekking, Snorkeling, Kayaking · Best time: Dec–Apr
Corcovado is Costa Rica's wildest national park: trekking through primary rainforest with tapirs and macaws, plus snorkelling and kayaking in the mangroves of Golfo Dulce. The stages are hot, long and only allowed with a guide — solid base fitness is a must. December to April is the dry, plannable window. Guided trek mandatory — book guide in Puerto Jiménez.
Puntarenas · Snorkeling, Hiking, Kayaking · Best time: Dec–Apr
A compact national park where you stack hiking, snorkelling and kayaking into a single day — sloths and capuchin monkeys are almost guaranteed. The trails are short and well built, ideal as an active introduction to the rainforest. Water visibility is best in the dry season. National park at 7am — wildlife sighting guaranteed.
Puntarenas · Zipline, Hiking · Best time: Dec–Apr
Cloud forest above 1,400 metres: you fly along long steel cables high above the treetops, then hike across hanging bridges through the canopy. Cooler than the coast and physically relaxed — the thrill comes from the height, not the effort. Sky Adventures zipline — 750m above the rainforest.
Guanacaste · Surfing · Best time: Year-round
The classic town for your first green waves: a sandy beach break with a gentle learning curve, surf schools and board rentals on every corner. The line-up gets busy, but everything is easy to organise — and the town has real life after dark. Want more? Day-trip to the reefs and points nearby. Beginner-friendly waves + a lively surf town.
Puntarenas · Surfing · Best time: Year-round
Playa Hermosa serves up powerful, fast beach-break peaks where your duck dive and take-off need to be dialled — Costa Rica's contest scene meets here. Neighbouring Jacó is the more forgiving entry point. About an hour from San José: the fastest route from touchdown to serious waves. Powerful beachbreaks for advanced surfers, close to San José.
Limón · Surfing, Snorkeling · Best time: Dec–Mar
Caribbean side, different pace: Salsa Brava breaks as a heavy reef wave and belongs to the experienced, while the beach breaks around Playa Cocles offer relaxed peaks for every level. Add snorkelling on the reefs towards Cahuita and Manzanillo. Swell season runs through the Caribbean winter. Caribbean vibe — Salsa Brava is Costa Rica's heaviest wave.
Guanacaste · Surfing, Yoga · Best time: Year-round
Playa Guiones works on every tide — you plan sessions around your energy, not the tide chart. A serious yoga and fitness scene has grown around the beach, perfect for mobility work on lay days. Calmer and tidier than the big surf towns, but a price league higher. Surf-and-yoga capital — Playa Guiones works on any tide.
Guanacaste · Hiking · Best time: Dec–Apr
Hiking on an active volcano: the loop trails pass bubbling mud pots and fumaroles on the way to waterfalls with swimming holes. Distances stay moderate, and afterwards you soak in hot springs around the park. In the dry season the trails are at their most reliable. Volcano NP with fumaroles, waterfalls & hot springs.
Puntarenas · Surfing · Best time: Year-round
A powerful beach break with noticeably more punch than the learner spots further north — ideal when you're ready for the next step. The town is small, rough around the edges and built entirely around surfing. On flat days, head for the waterfalls in the hinterland. Powerful waves + Nauyaca Falls in the hinterland.
