Spots in Fiji

Mamanuca Islands

Western · Surfing, Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: Apr–Oct

Reef passes with a world reputation: Cloudbreak ranks among the planet's best and most serious waves — regular surfers get friendlier reefs, plus dive and snorkel grounds between the island resorts. Boat logistics are part of every surf day here. In the dry season the south swells run most consistently. Tavarua Island Resort for Cloudbreak access — bucket list surf.

Taveuni

Northern · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: Apr–Oct

The garden island with the Rainbow Reef on its doorstep: soft corals in colours that look unreal, walls like the Great White Wall and current-swept channels full of fish. Diving runs on tide windows — the current is what switches the colours on. On land, waterfalls and coastal trails wait. Great White Wall dive — soft coral wall in neon colors.

Yasawa Islands

Western · Snorkeling, Kayaking, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Oct

An island chain made for hopping: with the ferry pass you jump island to island, snorkel house reefs, paddle between bays and hike volcanic ridgelines with lagoon views. Resorts range from backpacker mattress to barefoot luxury. South Seas sport without complicated planning. Bula Pass for island hopping — flexible and affordable.

Beqa Lagoon

Central · Scuba Diving · Best time: Year-round

One of the world's most famous shark dives: on the floor of Beqa Lagoon, feeding dives often gather more than twenty bull sharks at once — no cage, a strict briefing and experienced guides. Depth, current and adrenaline demand real dive experience. Experienced divers only — 20+ bull sharks per dive.

Kadavu

Eastern · Scuba Diving, Kayaking · Best time: Apr–Oct

A remote island on the Great Astrolabe Reef: in the passes, mantas queue at the cleaning stations — sightings are about as reliable as anywhere. In between, kayak along a coastline without roads. Few resorts, lots of reef: Fiji in rough-cut form. Manta Ray Passage — guaranteed manta sighting while diving.

Upper Navua Gorge

Central · Rafting, Whitewater, Kayaking · Best time: May–Oct

Black volcanic walls, in places barely five metres apart and over 40 metres high — and you're down there in an inflatable raft. The rapids run class II–III, so no rafting experience needed, but with enough punch to keep you grinning. At some point you stop counting the waterfalls dropping straight into the river. Access only via the licensed operator — the gorge has been a Ramsar site since 2006, so paddling it on your own is not an option.

Nananu-i-Ra

Western · Kitesurfing, Windsurfing, Snorkeling · Best time: May–Oct

Fiji's most established kite island: flat, reef-protected lagoons off the northern tip of Viti Levu, with steady southeast trades. Ideal for your first clean gybes or the switch to foil — and if you're solid, add a downwinder toward the mainland. You get there via Rakiraki, then about three kilometres by boat. The trades blow a reliable 15–25 knots from May to October — outside that window the kite gear stays packed.

Namena Marine Reserve

Northern · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: Apr–Oct

Around 70 square kilometres of barrier reef out in the Bligh Water, fully protected since 1997 — and you notice it on the first descent. At Grand Central Station you hang on the wall in the current watching curtains of barracuda, clouds of trevally and whitetips; at the Chimneys you spiral up pinnacles caked in soft coral. Not a beginner house reef, but nothing that overwhelms a solid diver. A strict no-take zone since 1997 — boats leave from Savusavu only, so a day trip means an early start.

Koroyanitu National Heritage Park

Western · Hiking, Trekking · Best time: May–Oct

The opposite of beach Fiji: mountain rainforest, open grassland ridges and the climb up Mount Batilamu (1,100 m), Fiji's fourth-highest peak. From Abaca village count on two to three hours each way, and from the top you look out over the Mamanucas and Yasawas. Add the waterfall loop if you like and stay overnight in the Batilamu lodge. Abaca sits just 30 minutes inland from Lautoka — go up by 4WD and book entry and a guide right in the village.

Natadola Beach

Western · Surfing, Horse Riding, Swimming · Best time: May–Sep

The rare case in Fiji: a wave you don't need a boat for. The shore break on the inner reef is gentle enough for a first surf lesson, while a left-hand reef section runs further out for anyone who can already stand up. When it's flat, there are guided horse rides straight along the beach. At low tide the inner reef goes razor-shallow — check the tide first or you'll get scraped.
