The best sport spots and adventures in Finland – travel tips, packing lists and first-hand experience from DOMISPORTS.
Lappland · Northern lights, Skiing · Best time: Dec–Mar
Winter sport deep in Lapland, well above the Arctic Circle: gentle fell pistes, endless cross-country tracks and dark nights where the northern lights dance regularly. Ski by day, watch for aurora at night — with pleasantly short distances in between. Glass igloos with aurora view — magical in February.
Lappland · Skiing, Husky tours · Best time: Nov–Apr
Lapland's winter-sport flagship: wide, immaculately groomed fell pistes with floodlights to beat the polar night, plus World Cup slalom history. After the lifts close, switch to cross-country tracks, snowmobiles or a husky sled. Finland's largest ski resort — snowboarder paradise.
Lappland · Dog sledding, Northern lights · Best time: Dec–Mar
The gateway to the Lapland winter: husky safaris through snowbound forests, snowshoe and snowmobile tours starting right at the edge of town. For the northern lights, head a few kilometres out of the city glow on clear nights. December–March best northern lights chance.
Südwestfinnland · Sightseeing, Archipelago tour · Best time: Jun–Aug
Finland's archipelago coast on your doorstep: explore the islands by bike and ferry on the Archipelago Trail — flat, relaxed and full of swimming spots. The old town on the River Aura marks your start and finish. Explore the archipelago by bike.
Südfinnland · Sauna, Sightseeing · Best time: Year-round
A Baltic capital with built-in recovery: public saunas right on the water, ice swimming in winter, plus bike and running paths along the waterfront. Training and regeneration sit ten minutes' walk apart here. Public saunas from €10 entry.
Nordösterbotten · Skiing, Cross-country skiing, Hiking · Best time: Oct–May
Finland's ski classic with a 200-plus-day season: 39 slopes on Rukatunturi plus around 100 km of trails straight from the village — free of charge, too. In summer Ruka turns into base camp for the Karhunkierros trek through Oulanka National Park. Slopes, tracks and backcountry vibes in one spot. Thanks to snow farming with stored last-season snow, the season kicks off in early October — months ahead of the Alps.
Lappland · Cross-country skiing, Skiing, Hiking · Best time: Nov–Apr
Around 330 km of groomed trails — Finland's most extensive network — plus a ski resort with 62 slopes on a free-standing fell, including Finland's longest run at 3 km. Two quiet villages instead of Alpine crowds, and the trails lead straight into the national park. If you're serious about cross-country, this is the place. On the Äkäslompolo side, the trails start right at the village edge and run straight into Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.
Nordkarelien · Hiking, Trail Running, MTB · Best time: Jun–Sep
Finland's most famous view — from Ukko-Koli across Lake Pielinen — doubles as a genuinely good trail playground. The Herajärvi loop serves up 61 km with a surprising amount of climbing by Finnish standards, plus marked MTB loops around the park. If you'd rather run, the rolling paths are perfect trail-running terrain. The 61 km Herajärvi loop splits into a northern (approx. 35 km) and southern leg — two relaxed days instead of a forced march.
Åland · Cycling, Kayaking, Sailing · Best time: May–Sep
Flat, quiet and a ferry every few kilometres: Åland is Finland's most laid-back cycling territory. The big archipelago loop runs 265 km with 15 ferry crossings — island hopping by bike like almost nowhere else. Throw in some kayaking or a Baltic swim and your summer week is sorted. Bringing a bike on the archipelago ferries requires its own ticket — book ahead with Ålandstrafiken.
Südsavo · Kayaking, Fishing, Hiking · Best time: May–Sep
Paddling through the Saimaa lake labyrinth, right in the home waters of the Saimaa ringed seal — one of the world's rarest seals, found nowhere else. Rent a kayak or canoe in the little village of Oravi and you're in the national park within minutes; multi-day trips over to Kolovesi are standard fare. Calm water, easy even without paddling experience. In May and June the Saimaa ringed seals haul out on shoreline rocks to moult — your best chance of spotting one.
