The best sport spots and adventures in Greece – travel tips, packing lists and first-hand experience from DOMISPORTS.
Kykladen · Kayaking, Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: May–Oct
Sport inside a flooded caldera: paddle beneath volcanic cliffs hundreds of metres tall, dive lava walls with impressive visibility and snorkel over black sand. It gets most dramatic towards evening, when the cliffs start to glow. Book sunset kayak from Ammoudi Bay — much better than the tourist viewpoint.
Dodekanes · Climbing, Bouldering, Scuba Diving · Best time: Mar–Nov
THE sport-climbing island: tufa curtains and caves right above the Aegean, thousands of well-bolted routes within walking distance, and an island life that revolves entirely around climbing. Rest days belong to the sea — Kalymnos was once the island of sponge divers. Grande Grotta for the full Kalymnos experience. Bring chalk!
Kreta · Hiking, Snorkeling, Scuba Diving · Best time: May–Oct
Europe's great gorge hike: sixteen kilometres downhill through the White Mountains to the Libyan Sea, squeezing through rock gates just a few metres apart. Crystal-clear water rewards you at the bottom — snorkel stop in Agia Roumeli included. Start early at 6am, bring enough water (3L!).
Ionische Inseln · Windsurfing, Kitesurfing, SUP, Sailing · Best time: May–Oct
Ionian wind you can set your watch by: Vasiliki bay has ranked among Europe's best learning grounds for decades, because the day reliably switches from flat-water to full-power mode. Kiters head for the lagoons, sailors tack between the neighbouring islands. Thermal wind from 2pm — mornings are flat for practicing.
Thessalien · Climbing, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Oct
Climbing between monasteries in the sky: the conglomerate towers of Thessaly are among Greece's oldest climbing grounds — airy ridges, friction climbing and plenty of respect for the rock. Hikers link the monasteries on old monks' paths. Book a guided climbing tour — solo climbing is forbidden.
Kykladen · Windsurfing, Kitesurfing, Hiking · Best time: Jun–Sep
A Cycladic powerhouse for wind sports: when the Meltemi blows through, flat-water lagoon and wave side work together at a single spot — learning and full throttle side by side. Fill calm days hiking the mountainous interior towards Mount Zas. Meltemi wind makes Mikri Vigla a watersports hotspot.
Dodekanes · Windsurfing, Kitesurfing · Best time: May–Sep
One sand spit, two playgrounds: choppy waves on one side, flat water on the other — you simply switch beaches to match your level and mood. In summer the Meltemi delivers wind with a high hit rate. Two seas, two conditions on one sandspit.
Kykladen · SUP, Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: May–Oct
A volcanic coastline like another planet: white tuff cliffs, sea caves and dozens of beaches, many reachable only from the water. Exactly that makes Milos first-class SUP and snorkelling terrain — dive centres show you the lava arches below. Sarakiniko & sea caves — kayak/SUP to hidden coves.
Peloponnes · Climbing · Best time: Oct–Apr
Huge red limestone walls above a stone-built village: Leonidio packs hundreds of sport routes with plenty of winter sun and tufa climbing reminiscent of Kalymnos. In the evening the scene gathers on the village square — climbing is part of the townscape here. Red rock above the sea — Europe's winter climbing destination.
Ionische Inseln · Kayaking, Snorkeling · Best time: May–Oct
An Ionian postcard coast with substance: by kayak you reach caves, arches and beaches no road touches, and sea turtles are no rarity in the clear water — Laganas Bay is a caretta sanctuary. Keep your distance and drift. Navagio Bay & sea caves by boat/kayak.
Ionische Inseln · Scuba Diving, Hiking · Best time: May–Oct
A green Ionian island for endurance lovers: the long-distance trail across the island links olive groves, mountain villages and lonely coastlines, while the rocky north coast keeps quiet dive sites with clear water. Spring and autumn are best for the walking. Corfu Trail (220 km) + quiet north-coast dive spots.
Makedonien · Snorkeling, Hiking · Best time: May–Oct
Three peninsulas, one pattern: pines down to the waterline and coves in Caribbean colours. On Sithonia you snorkel rocky reefs away from the resort blocks, trails cross the wooded ridges — and Mount Athos greets you from afar. Three peninsulas, clear water — Sithonia is the finest.
Nordevischer Golf, Anfahrt über Oreoi · Yoga, Meditation · Best time: Apr–Oct
A privately owned island in the North Euboean Gulf with six rooms, running off-grid on solar power and rainwater collected over winter. Retreats run Sunday to Saturday with rotating guest teachers, all-inclusive; the island has an organic olive farm and a small church of Saints Cosmas and Damian. The final leg is a water taxi from Orei on northern Evia — plan the trip via Athens and agree the boat time with the hosts in advance.
