Gritstone is a universe of its own: Stanage Edge packs over 2,000 trad routes onto up to 20 metres of rough rock, plus well-known boulder fields like Plantation and Burbage. Non-climbers hike the Dark Peak moors above the Hope Valley or ride MTB on old railway trails. Stanage is pure trad rock with no bolts — without your own rack, hit the bouldering at Stanage Plantation right below the edge.

Britain's MTB heartland: Glentress serves up over 75 kilometres of built trails from green family loops to black tech lines, while Innerleithen adds four downhill tracks rated among the island's best. Bike hire and skills coaching sit right at the trailhead. Glentress for flow trails, Innerleithen for downhill — the two trail centres are just a ten-minute drive apart.

Coasteering was born here: in a wetsuit you climb, swim and jump along the national park's cliffs through caves, arches and tidal pools — with a guide, zero experience needed. Sea kayakers paddle out to seals and hidden coves, and the 300-kilometre Coast Path runs above it all. Coasteering was invented in St Davids in 1986 — at Abereiddy's Blue Lagoon you jump at the original spot.

The Wye is THE canoe river of Britain: mellow water, wooded gorges and multi-day trips of up to 100 miles with riverside camping stops. At Symonds Yat there's the one small rapid — doable for anyone who can hold a paddle. Paddle from Hereford to Symonds Yat in three days — the campsites sit right on the river and your gear rides along in the boat.

The 'Hawaii of the North': this flat Hebridean island catches every Atlantic wind, and white-sand bays facing all directions mean there's always a spot that works. October brings the Tiree Wave Classic, the world's longest-running wave windsurfing contest — get there on the CalMac ferry from Oban.

A bouldering centre at Centenary Works, 150 Little London Road (S8 0UJ), run across three units: The Climbing Works in Unit B2, The Mini Works in Unit G and Unit E. The operator lists eleven Fontainebleau-style boulder circuits of 20 to 40 problems each, graded F2 to F8a, plus a 35-degree circuit board from f6A to f9a, two Beastmaker boards at 35 and 45 degrees, and a training area with Beastmaker 1000 and 2000, rings, free weights and a stretching space; the Mini Works has a splatter board set for younger climbers. Resets happen weekly. Hours are Mon–Fri 10am–10pm, Thursdays only from noon because of routesetting, and Sat/Sun 10am–8pm. Thursday mornings are shut: because of routesetting the gym opens at noon, while on the other weekdays it opens at 10am.

Cowes sits where the Medina meets the Solent, a strait with strong tidal streams. Cowes Harbour Commission manages 4,300 m of pontoons, 276 swinging moorings and 40 pile moorings; depending on the spot, draughts up to 4.5 m are possible, the inner harbour limit is 6 knots through the water, and spring tides can run up to 2 knots in the harbour area. Craft up to 20 m avoid the main entrance via the Eastern Channel, 35 m wide at its narrowest and dredged to 2.25 m. Cowes Week runs in early August: 35 classes raced in 2026, and the 2027 edition falls on 31 July to 6 August. Charter bases here require level 3 experience for bareboat. Do not improvise around the Medina chain ferry: call the floating bridge on VHF 69 at least five minutes ahead and agree which side it will hold for your passage.

A circuit around a deer park: the Tamsin Trail runs just over 7 miles (about 11.3 km) through the park and is well used by runners and walkers alike. The park covers more than 5,000 acres and is designated both a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a National Nature Reserve. Around 600 red and fallow deer have roamed free here since 1637 — keep your distance, especially during rut and birthing season. Pedestrian gates stay open around the clock; vehicle gates only from 7am to 8pm. Don't plan on driving for an early or late run: pedestrian gates are open 24/7, vehicle gates only from 7am to 8pm.
