The best sport spots and adventures in India – travel tips, packing lists and first-hand experience from DOMISPORTS.
Goa · Surfing, Yoga, Kayaking · Best time: Nov–Apr
India's most relaxed active coast: small, learner-friendly waves on the northern beaches, yoga retreats at every price point and kayak trips through backwaters and river mouths. Ideal as a gentle start to the India adventure. Ashwem/Mandrem for calmer vibes than Calangute.
Uttarakhand · Rafting, Yoga, Trekking · Best time: Nov–Apr
The world's yoga capital with whitewater on its doorstep: raft Ganges rapids up to Class IV, then stretch it out again at the ashram. Nowhere else serves this mix of flow and full throttle so cheaply. 16 km Marine Drive rafting — Class III-IV, from ~€15.
Jammu & Kashmir · MTB, Trekking, Rafting · Best time: Jun–Sep
High desert at 3,500 metres and above: bike over some of the world's highest rideable passes, trek canyon routes to monasteries and raft the Indus and Zanskar. Without proper acclimatisation, nothing works up here. Khardung La (5,359m) by MTB — acclimatize in Leh 3 days!
Himachal Pradesh · Paragliding, Skiing, Rafting · Best time: Nov–Apr
Himachal's adventure valley: ski the Solang slopes in winter, and in spring paragliders and rafts launch almost by the minute. Everything sits close together — you switch sports faster than you'd switch car parks elsewhere. Solang Valley paragliding — spectacularly cheap.
Andaman & Nicobar · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Kayaking · Best time: Nov–Apr
India's remote island jewel in the Andaman Sea: intact reefs, white sand and dive schools on Havelock that train beginners properly. Getting there takes time — in return you dive waters hardly anyone has on their radar. Havelock Island PADI from ~€250.
Maharashtra · Rafting, Whitewater · Best time: Jun–Sep
Thanks to dam releases, the Kundalika has whitewater almost year-round — about 12 kilometres of class II–III rapids that are doable with zero experience. During the monsoon the river really swells and things get splashy. It's a good three hours from Mumbai or Pune — the west coast's whitewater quick fix. The Bhira dam releases water around 8 am — get there early or you'll miss the best surge.
Kerala · Kayaking, SUP, Cycling · Best time: Nov–Mar
Instead of watching from a houseboat deck, you explore the backwaters by kayak here — through palm-lined village canals too narrow for the big boats. Tours run four to ten hours, past paddy fields and fishermen, on flat, calm water. Perfect if you'd rather paddle yourself than be chauffeured. Take the sunrise tour from 6:30 am — glassy water, cool air, and you'll have the canals almost to yourself.
Kerala · Yoga, Surfing, SUP · Best time: Nov–Mar
Yoga on the red cliff above the Arabian Sea, then down to the beach for a surf — Varkala is Kerala's most laid-back sports combo. The waves are beginner-friendly, and schools like Soul & Surf teach in the morning when conditions are at their best. In between: Ayurveda and clifftop cafés. Surf lessons run early in the morning while the wind is still asleep — afternoons turn onshore and choppy.
Himachal Pradesh · Paragliding, Trekking · Best time: Oct–Nov, Mar–May
India's paragliding capital and host of the 2015 Paragliding World Cup: launch at 2,400 metres in Billing, land 1,000 vertical metres lower in Bir, with the Dhauladhar range in front of you. Tandem flights last 15 to 30 minutes and need zero experience. Stay longer and add treks through the Kangra valley. July to September is monsoon shutdown with no flying — outside that, grab the early slot, the air is calmest in the morning.
Karnataka · Bouldering, Climbing, Cycling · Best time: Oct–Mar
One of the most extensive bouldering areas on the planet: golden granite boulders as far as you can see, scattered among 800-year-old temple ruins (UNESCO World Heritage). Sharp crimps, technical arêtes and cracks — everything from moderate lines to highball projects. From October to March the international bouldering scene makes its pilgrimage here. The 'Golden Boulders' guidebook maps the blocks — just rent crash pads locally from the climbing guesthouses.
Karnataka · Yoga, Meditation, City break · Best time: Year-round
Karnataka's tourism board lists Mysuru as a yoga destination: Ashtanga institutions such as the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute, Atharva Yoga Shala and Sachidananda Ashtanga Yoga Shala draw practitioners for workshops, teacher trainings and direct instruction — K. Pattabhi Jois, who originated Ashtanga Yoga, lived and taught here. The Sharath Yoga Centre states its Ashtanga classes run all year, taught by its authorised teachers. The Sharath Yoga Centre is not in the city: its postal address is the Hebbal 2nd Phase Industrial Area in Srirangapatna Taluk, Mandya District — plan the ride. Philosophy and Sanskrit classes are registered for in person only after you arrive.
Maharashtra · Yoga, Meditation, City break
The Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Model Colony was founded by B. K. S. Iyengar in 1975 and is the home of Iyengar Yoga. Registration runs online and only becomes binding when you visit in person; the office is open Monday to Saturday, 9am–12noon and 4–6pm. According to the institute, the regular classes of the 2026/27 year are for residents of India only — RIMYI refers international practitioners to recognised Iyengar teachers in their own country.
