Spots in Japan

Hakuba

Nagano · Skiing, Snowboarding · Best time: Dec–Mar

One of Japan's biggest ski regions: ten resorts spread across the Hakuba valley, offering everything from wide carving pistes to legendary powder tree runs. The snow arrives reliably and in bulk — 'Japow' is no marketing gag. Happo One for groomed runs, Cortina for off-piste powder.

Yakushima

Kagoshima · Trekking, Hiking, Kayaking · Best time: Jun–Oct

Moss-covered primeval forest, thousand-year-old cedars and trails straight out of a Ghibli film: Yakushima's paths cross one of Japan's rainiest forests. The long day hike to the Jōmon cedar demands fitness — a rain jacket is mandatory kit. Jōmon Sugi Trail (22 km) — 7,000 year old tree as destination.

Kamakura / Shonan

Kanagawa · Surfing, Hiking · Best time: Jun–Oct

Tokyo's surf suburb: on the Shonan coast you learn in gentle beach breaks with views of Enoshima — and on clear days, of Mount Fuji. Add hiking paths through the Kamakura hills from temple to temple. A city escape without logistics. Daibutsu Hiking Trail + Kugenuma Beach surf = perfect day.

Niseko

Hokkaido · Skiing, Snowboarding · Best time: Dec–Mar

Japan's most famous powder address, up on Hokkaido: metres of dry snow, floodlit night runs and a gate system that opens the backcountry in controlled fashion. International, comfortable — and in demand accordingly. Night skiing in Niseko Grand Hirafu — lit runs until 8:30pm.

Miyako-jima

Okinawa · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, SUP · Best time: Jun–Oct

Okinawa's beach jewel: white sand, turquoise shallows and reefs you partly reach straight from shore. Between snorkel sessions you SUP from bay to bay — island training doesn't get more relaxed. Yonaha Maehama Beach — Japan's most beautiful beach.

Naoshima

Kagawa · Cycling, Kayaking · Best time: Jun–Oct

The art island in the Seto Inland Sea is best explored by bike: museums, sculptures and quiet coves sit minutes apart, and the climbs stay humane. Swap perspective by kayak and paddle along the coast. Chichu Art Museum + Benesse House in one day by bike.

Mount Fuji

Yamanashi · Hiking · Best time: Jul–Sep

Japan's sacred mountain is hard work: over 1,400 metres of ascent from the fifth station, thin air and the classic overnight push for sunrise. Technically simple, physically serious — and officially open only in the summer window. Climbing season Jul–Sep — summit sunrise (Goraikō).

Okinawa / Kerama

Okinawa · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: Jun–Oct

The Kerama islands off Naha are known for 'Kerama blue': exceptionally clear water, healthy coral gardens and turtles on almost every outing. Many sites are shallow and calm — ideal for beginners and easy snorkel days. 'Kerama Blue' — up to 50 m visibility, mantas & turtles.

Kamikōchi

Nagano · Hiking · Best time: Apr–Nov

A car-free valley in the Japanese Alps: walk flat riverside paths along the crystal-clear Azusa with 3,000-metre peaks like Hotaka overhead. If you want more, serious alpine routes start here — the valley itself stays pure pleasure. Heart of the Japanese Alps — a car-free highland valley.

Ishigaki

Okinawa · Scuba Diving, Surfing · Best time: Jun–Oct

A subtropical dive region with one trump card: mantas regularly cruise the cleaning stations off Kabira Bay. Add reefs of every difficulty and a few outer-reef surf spots — Japan's south at its wildest. Manta cleaning stations on Kabira reef.

Nozawa Onsen

Nagano · Skiing · Best time: Dec–Mar

Skiing like it used to be: a genuine mountain village with narrow lanes, steaming public bathhouses and a mountain that runs from gentle slopes to steep powder lines. After the last lift, a hot soak awaits — free of charge. Traditional village with powder + 13 free onsen.

Chiba / Ichinomiya

Chiba · Surfing · Best time: Jun–Oct

The beach-break coast on Tokyo's doorstep: Ichinomiya and its neighbours serve consistent waves, and the 2021 Olympic surfing medals were decided here. Reachable by train, with a serious local surf culture — respect in the line-up pays off. 2021 Olympic surf spot — best beachbreaks near Tokyo.

Mizugaki

Hokuto, Präfektur Yamanashi · Bouldering, Climbing, Hiking · Best time: May–Nov

Mount Mizugaki, 2,230 m, at the western end of the Chichibu range, sits inside Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park in the city of Hokuto (Sutama), Yamanashi. The local tourism association describes the mountain as formed entirely of biotite granite and counts more than 160 free-standing boulders in the area. At its foot there is a free prefectural car park for around 100 vehicles near the Mizugaki-yama Lodge. Access along the Crystal Line forest road is normally closed in winter from late November to late April; the speed limit is 20 km/h and vehicles with eleven or more seats are prohibited. The road is closed during heavy rain of 10 mm per hour or 50 mm cumulative, and after earthquakes of magnitude 4 or above. Come in a normal car: the forest road has a 20 km/h limit and vehicles with eleven or more seats are barred, so minibuses have to stay down in the valley.

Rusutsu

Hokkaidō / Shiribeshi · Snowboarding, Freeride, Skiing · Best time: Nov–Mar

Three mountains — West Mountain, East Mountain and Mount Isola — with 37 runs, four gondolas and 14 lifts, each about 90 minutes by car from Sapporo and from New Chitose airport. Sitting southeast of Mount Yōtei shelters the resort from harsh northwesterly winds, per the operator, while its closeness to the Pacific coast brings plenty of sunny winter days. For 2025/26 the operator listed: pre-season from 29 November, main season 20 December to 15 March, spring operations to 31 March; night riding mid-December to 30 March, 4pm to 8pm, last lift 7.45pm. Dates for the following season were not yet published at the time of checking. It is about 90 minutes by road from both Sapporo and New Chitose airport, so stay on site rather than day-tripping if you want the first gondola laps on Mount Isola.

Tokio

Kantō · Running, Cycling · Best time: Mar–May & Oct–Nov

A marathon straight through the city: the Tokyo Marathon starts at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku and finishes 42.195 km later at the Wadakura-Gate intersection by the Imperial Palace. The route passes Shinjuku, Kuramae, Nihombashi, Ginza and Hibiya, with the elevation profile shown on the official course map. It is one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, and the 2027 edition falls on 7 March. Lead runners are expected to finish in about 2:02. The start is in Shinjuku but the finish is at the Wadakura-Gate intersection by the Imperial Palace — book your hotel and plan bag drop around the Marunouchi finish, not the start.

Murasaki Park Kasama

Kasama, Präfektur Ibaraki · Skateboarding, BMX, Inline Skating · Best time: Mar–Nov

Skate facility inside Kasama Geijutsu no Mori park: 4,600 sqm of skating split into a park zone (460 sqm), a street zone (870 sqm) and a flat/beginner zone (2,650 sqm including a 110 sqm mini bowl), plus a 450 sqm indoor zone. It is run by Murasaki Sports on behalf of the city of Kasama and opens every day except 1 January and 31 December.
