Spots in Canada

Whistler

British Columbia · MTB, Skiing, Hiking · Best time: Year-round

North America's benchmark for mountain sport: in winter a huge two-mountain ski area, in summer the bike park every other park measures against. Add gondola-served alpine hikes — Whistler is volume and world class at once. A-Line trail in the bike park — the most famous flow trail in the world.

Banff / Lake Louise

Alberta · Kayaking, Hiking, Skiing · Best time: Year-round

The postcard Rockies: paddle turquoise glacier lakes, hike to teahouses high above the shores and ski three resorts in winter. Yes, everyone wants in — starting early stays your secret weapon. Lake Louise canoe rental from 7am — after that 2h wait.

Tofino

British Columbia · Surfing, Kayaking, Hiking · Best time: Year-round

Canada's surf capital on the edge of the rainforest: wide sandy beaches with gentle beach breaks, plus kayak tours through Clayoquot Sound and trails beneath old-growth giants. The water stays cold — the stoke doesn't. Cox Bay for intermediates, Chesterman Beach for beginners.

Jasper

Alberta · Kayaking, Hiking, Skiing · Best time: Year-round

The wilder north of the Rockies: fewer visitors than Banff, but glacier lakes like Maligne, endless trails and nights inside one of the world's largest dark-sky preserves. Moose and bears are everyday here, not an event. Spirit Island boat tour or kayak — Canada's postcard motif.

Cape Breton / Cabot Trail

Nova Scotia · Cycling, Hiking, Kayaking · Best time: Jun–Oct

One of North America's great scenic loops: the Cabot Trail winds nearly 300 kilometres over sea cliffs and through highlands — as a bike tour, an honest multi-day project. You often spot whales right from the cliffs. Skyline Trail (7 km) for the best viewpoint.

Nahanni

Northwest Territories · Kayaking, Trekking · Best time: Jun–Sep

Wilderness with no back door: you fly into Nahanni by floatplane, then paddle for days through canyons past the wall of Virginia Falls. Full self-sufficiency, real consequences — expedition class. Fly-in canoe trip (7-14 days) — absolute wilderness.

Squamish

British Columbia · Bouldering, Climbing, MTB · Best time: Apr–Oct

Between sea and granite: the Stawamus Chief serves multi-pitch classics, the forest below holds one of North America's best bouldering areas, and the MTB trail network branches out alongside. Routes, blocs, bikes — all within shouting distance. The Chief — granite monolith + top boulders & trails.

Revelstoke

British Columbia · Skiing, MTB · Best time: Dec–Apr

A resort built around vertical: long, steep uninterrupted descents, dry interior powder and cat- and heli-skiing straight from town. In summer enduro trails take over — little here is tame. North America's greatest vertical + cat/heli skiing.

Gros Morne

Neufundland · Hiking · Best time: Jun–Sep

Newfoundland's UNESCO wonder: on the Tablelands you hike across orange mantle rock that should sit kilometres underground, while fjords carve into the Long Range Mountains next door. Raw, windy, utterly its own. Fjords & exposed mantle rock — a UNESCO site.

Tofino / Cox Bay

British Columbia · Surfing · Best time: Year-round

Cox Bay is Tofino's sportiest beach: the exposed beach break catches the most swell, and Canada's national surf contests run here. Winter storms bring the most powerful waves — in a thick suit, the session becomes a question of character. Canada's surf capital — waves even in winter (suit up).

Mont-Tremblant

Québec · Skiing, MTB · Best time: Nov–Apr

Eastern Canada's flagship mountain: a compact, well-groomed ski area above an alpine-style village, with a bike park and trail network in summer. Not giant terrain, but high density — ideal for trips where everything should be walkable. Eastern Canada's top resort — ski in winter, bike park in summer.

Bruce Peninsula

Ontario · Scuba Diving, Hiking · Best time: Jun–Sep

Freshwater diving with Caribbean looks: the Fathom Five marine park holds historic wrecks in the clear, turquoise-tinged water of Lake Huron. Above the surface you hike the Bruce Trail to the famous grotto — it stays cold regardless. Turquoise Grotto + wreck diving in Fathom Five park.

Desolation Sound

British Columbia, Sunshine Coast · Sailing, Kayaking, Hiking

A marine provincial park with more than 60 km of shoreline, several islands and many small coves, 145 km north of Vancouver and north of Powell River and Lund. BC Parks lists it as a boating and kayaking destination with calm water and warm swimming; Prideaux Haven, Tenedos Bay and Grace Harbour are the three main coves, with shore campsites at Tenedos Bay and Grace Harbour. No-anchoring buoys mark the eelgrass beds. There is no potable water in the park and no facilities for diving. The park has no drinking water and no supplies — take on water, diesel and stores at Lund or Powell River, and keep the anchor out of the buoyed zones over the eelgrass.

Val-Morin

Laurentides, Québec · Yoga, Meditation, Hiking · Best time: Year-round

The Sivananda Yoga Camp on 8e Avenue offers two open yoga classes a day, at 8am and 4pm — on the pond platform when the weather allows, otherwise in Mataji Hall or the Annapoorna building. Week and weekend retreats plus a four-week teacher training round out the programme. The two daily classes at 8am and 4pm are open to people living locally, with no overnight stay required.

Stanley Park Seawall

British Columbia · Running, Cycling · Best time: Apr–Oct

A waterside path around a forested peninsula: the seawall hugs the perimeter of Stanley Park for 10 km, across more than 1,000 acres of coastal rainforest. It follows the waterline the whole way, so the loop has no real climbs — useful for steady long runs and for tempo work without intersections. Walking the full circuit is rated at about three hours, cycling at just over one. The 10 km loop is signposted at about three hours on foot and just over an hour by bike — running lands in between, so don't read the posted times as run times.
