The best sport spots and adventures in Colombia – travel tips, packing lists and first-hand experience from DOMISPORTS.
Magdalena · Trekking · Best time: Dec–Mar
Four to five days through the Sierra Nevada to a terraced city older than Machu Picchu. The trek is sweaty work — mud, river crossings, tropical heat — but fully organised with camps along the route. Guided only; the trail traditionally closes in September. Only possible with licensed guide — 4-5 days, from ~€250.
Santander · Rafting, Canyoning, Paragliding · Best time: Year-round
Colombia's outdoor capital: whitewater from class III for starters to class V for the experienced, canyoning down waterfalls and paragliding over the Chicamocha canyon. Prices are fair enough to pack several sports into one week. A good base with short rides to every spot. Río Chicamocha rafting Class IV-V — for experienced. Class III for beginners.
Magdalena · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Hiking · Best time: Dec–Apr
One of South America's cheapest places to get your diving licence: calm bays, short boat rides, plenty of schools. Then combine Caribbean dives with coastal hikes through Tayrona National Park to remote beaches. Mind the park's annual closure periods. PADI Open Water in Taganga from ~€250 — much cheaper than Caribbean islands.
Antioquia · Paragliding, Hiking, Cycling · Best time: Dec–Mar
Eternal spring makes Medellín a flying city: tandem paragliding over the green slopes of the Aburrá valley costs a fraction of European prices. In Guatapé you climb the 700-odd steps of the rock monolith, then cycle along the reservoir. Easy entry, big pictures. Tandem paragliding from ~€35 — unbeatable value.
Quindío · Hiking, Horse Riding · Best time: Dec–Mar
Hiking among the tallest palms on earth: the wax palms of the Cocora valley reach up to 60 metres. The classic loop takes about five hours through cloud forest and across hanging bridges, with sections doable on horseback. Start early, before the clouds roll into the valley. Valle de Cocora hike (5h loop) through cloud forest.
Quindío · MTB, Hiking · Best time: Dec–Mar
Coffee country for staying active: you cycle between fincas across green ridgelines, hike to viewpoints and learn along the way how your espresso is made. Distances are humane, the climbing honest all the same. An ideal base for adding the Cocora valley. Valle de Cocora wax palms — ride through coffee fincas.
San Andrés y Providencia · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: Dec–Apr
A Caribbean island on a barrier reef: dive and snorkel over intact corals and walls at depths for every level, in water that stays warm all year. The island itself is an easy one-day loop by bike. Dive centres are plentiful and prices fair. 'Sea of seven colours' — pure Caribbean reefs.
La Guajira · Kitesurfing, Windsurfing · Best time: Dec–Apr
A desert cape in La Guajira where the trade wind blows across flat, hip-deep water — learning conditions you rarely find. You sleep in hammocks with Wayuu families; comfort and electricity are minimal. That reduction is exactly the point: wind, water, nothing else. Desert meets sea — steady wind in Wayuu country.
Cundinamarca · Climbing · Best time: Dec–Mar
Colombia's climbing classic an hour north of Bogotá: a long sandstone wall with hundreds of routes from easy to demanding, sport and trad mixed. At weekends the capital's scene gathers here; midweek you'll climb almost alone. Guides and gear right in the village. Colombia's birthplace of climbing — sandstone near Bogotá.
Chocó · Surfing · Best time: May–Oct
Surfing the wild Pacific: waves break against a jungle backdrop, reachable only by boat or bush plane — you share the line-ups with a handful of people. In peak season the South Pacific delivers the most swell while humpback whales pass offshore. Remote and not cheap, but uncompromisingly real. Pacific rainforest — waves & humpback whales (Jul–Oct).
La Guajira · Surfing, SUP · Best time: Dec–Mar
A backpacker beach between the Sierra Nevada and the Caribbean: gentle waves for learning, plus the classic tube or SUP float down the Palomino river to the sea. Hammocks on the beach instead of party circus. Respect the current — not every stretch is safe for swimming. River tubing + waves where the Sierra meets the sea.
