Karst country on the Nam Song: paddle between limestone towers, climb bolted walls with river views and jump into turquoise lagoons and caves. A temple town on the Mekong with outdoor reach: cycle to villages and rice paddies, paddle the Nam Khan and swim in the turquoise travertine pools of Kuang Si. Mornings belong to the monks, days to the surrounding country. Gentle active travel with a World Heritage backdrop. Kuang Si in the afternoon — group tours come in the morning.

A coffee plateau dense with waterfalls: on the loop from Pakse you link coffee farms, villages and falls like Tad Fane, where twin strands plunge more than 100 metres into the gorge. Motorbike, MTB or bicycle — the roads are quiet, the climate pleasantly cool. Plan three days, stay longer. 3-day motorbike loop from Pakse.
Champasak · Kayaking, Cycling · Best time: Nov–Apr
Here the Mekong fans out into a labyrinth of islands: on Don Det and Don Khon you cycle between rice paddies and old French bridge relics, and by kayak you paddle to the Khone falls and, with luck, the rare Irrawaddy dolphins. The river sets the pace — and it's in no hurry. Don Det by bike (€2/day) + kayak to the dolphins.

Karst towers above the Nam Ou: the viewpoint hikes are short, steep and deliver views out of all proportion to the effort. Add kayak stages on the river, limestone climbing routes and villages you only reach by boat. The quiet counterpart to Vang Vieng. 100 Views viewpoint hike (1h) — the most beautiful view in Laos.
Khammouane · Climbing, Bouldering, Cycling · Best time: Nov–Mar
Limestone heaven: most of Laos' roughly 600 sport routes hang here and in Vang Vieng — grades 4 to 8c, 12 to 40 metres, packed with stalactites and tufas to hang off. Green Climbers Home sits right under the rock, plus about 73 boulder problems from FB 4c to 7b for the so-called rest day. And when your fingers are done, the near-500 km Thakhek Loop along Routes 12 and 13 is waiting. The crag sits a good 12 km east of Thakhek — without your own scooter you're tied to the camp transfers.
Khammouane · Kayaking, Cycling, Cave tours · Best time: Nov–Apr
The Nam Hin Boun river vanishes into the mountain here and pops out seven kilometres later — in between you sit in a longtail boat in total darkness, in chambers so high the torch beam never reaches the roof. The sport happens around it: kayaking on the Nam Hin Boun and the Thakhek Loop stages through the karst walls of Phou Hin Poun. Technically the passage asks nothing of you — the wow comes purely from the setting. From the turn-off at Ban Nahin on Route 8 it's still around 40 km of dead-end road to the cave mouth — it doesn't work as a drive-by stop.
Luang Namtha · Trekking, Kayaking, MTB · Best time: Nov–Mar
Nam Ha is Laos' only ASEAN Heritage Park and one of the country's first protected areas — treks run two to four days through mountain jungle, stream crossings included, overnighting in Akha or Khmu villages. If you'd rather paddle, take the Nam Ha or Nam Tha by kayak; for bikes there are gravel loops through the valleys. No high mountains, but humidity, heat and vertical metres add up faster than the map suggests. You can only enter the protected area with a licensed guide — the booking offices are all on the main street in Luang Namtha.
Houaphanh · Safari, Trekking · Best time: Nov–Apr
4,107 km² of mountain forest spread across Houaphan, Luang Prabang and Xieng Khouang — and the only programme in Laos where you head up the Nam Nern by boat after dark and spotlight for wildlife. Want more movement? Take the Nests trek with a night in spherical baskets slung in the trees, or the four-to-five-day Cloud Forest Climb up Phou Louey. That last one is no stroll: days of steep forest, camps in the middle of nowhere, guide mandatory. Tigers have been considered extinct here since 2013 — what shows up in the spotlight at night is deer, civets and birds, not big cats.
Vientiane · Hiking, Trekking, Swimming · Best time: Oct–Feb
The fastest way out of Vientiane into real jungle: a sandstone plateau with river gorges, 200 to 1,761 metres, and waterfalls like Tad Xay and Pha Xay at the end of marked trails. The standard loop from Ban Hatkhai is a solid 1.5-hour guided hike, plus boat trips on the river and a pool below Tad Xay to jump into. It's not demanding — but it's the one national park you can do from the capital in a day. The access road branches off Route 13 just before Thabok, about 90 km south of Vientiane — then it's a rough track to Ban Hatkhai.
