Sport adventures in Latvia

The best sport spots and adventures in Latvia – travel tips, packing lists and first-hand experience from DOMISPORTS.

Spots in Latvia

Gauja Nationalpark

Vidzeme · Kayaking, Hiking, Bouldering · Best time: May–Sep

Latvia's outdoor classic: the Gauja meanders calmly between red sandstone cliffs, so canoe and kayak trips run without whitewater stress. On land, trails lead to caves and castle ruins — perfect for your first paddling weekend. Canoe tour Cēsis → Sigulda (30 km) is the classic.

Riga

Riga · Cycling, SUP, Running · Best time: May–Sep

Riga trains surprisingly well: wide bike paths along the Daugava, SUP on the city canal, and in Mežaparks a forest running ground right inside the city. Beach on top — the Baltic is just a short train ride away. Mežaparks forest run + beach — Riga's hidden outdoor gem.

Sigulda

Vidzeme · Zipline, Hiking, Bouldering · Best time: May–Oct

Latvia's adventure capital above the Gauja valley: a zipline across the river, trails linking three castles, and a genuine World Cup bobsleigh track offering guest runs. Lots of action in a small area — well organised and affordable. Turaida-Sigulda zipline over the river — 1,000m long!

Kuldīga

Kuldīga · Hiking, Cycling · Best time: May–Sep

Small-town idyll with a natural phenomenon: here the Venta spills over Europe's widest waterfall — barely two metres high but nearly 250 metres across. Around it you cycle and hike through avenues and river valleys, with zero mass tourism. Watch jumping fish in spring — unique natural spectacle.

Cēsis

Vidzeme · Kayaking, Hiking, Cycling · Best time: May–Sep

The best starting point for paddling the Gauja: from Cēsis you drift for days through forested sandstone valleys, with campsites right on the river. The medieval old town makes rest days worthwhile too. Gauja by kayak from Cēsis — 2-day tour through the national park.

Ķemeri Nationalpark

Jūrmala · Hiking, Cycling · Best time: May–Oct

A huge raised bog just outside Riga: the boardwalk snakes between bog pools and dwarf pines, and the observation tower gives you the full panorama. Add flat cycling and hiking trails through forest and sulphur-spring terrain — a perfect half-day workout from Riga, even reachable by public transport. Only the big 3.4 km loop passes the observation tower — the short loop skips it.

Pāvilosta

Kurzeme · Surfing, Kitesurfing, SUP · Best time: Jun–Oct

Latvia's surf capital: a small harbour town on the open Baltic with a wide sandy beach that delivers clean side-onshore conditions on southwest wind. Surf school, kite rental and SUP right on the beach — Baltic waves are wind-driven, so check the forecast rather than expecting guaranteed swell. The waves are wind-driven — southwest wind works best, most consistent in autumn.

Salaca-Tal

Vidzeme · Kayaking, Hiking, Fishing · Best time: May–Sep

Latvia's second most popular paddling river after the Gauja: crystal-clear water, red Devonian sandstone cliffs with caves, and small rapids that are fun without throwing you out. The classic is the two-day Mazsalaca–Staicele run (39 km) camping right on the riverbank. Put in at Mazsalaca — the first kilometres through Skaņaiskalns park run along the sandstone cliffs.

Kap Kolka & Slītere Nationalpark

Kurzeme · Cycling, Hiking, Kitesurfing · Best time: May–Sep

At the northern tip of Kurzeme the open Baltic and the Gulf of Riga visibly collide. Around it lies Slītere National Park: flat cycling routes on old narrow-gauge railway beds (EuroVelo 10), coastal hiking trails through Livonian fishing villages and miles of empty beach — cycling in Latvia doesn't get lonelier than this. Don't swim right off the cape — the currents where the Baltic meets the Gulf of Riga are notorious.

Rāzna Nationalpark

Latgale · Kayaking, Swimming, Cycling · Best time: May–Sep

Latvia's second-largest lake with islets, sheltered bays and clear water — ideal for kayaking, plus swimming spots and gentle hills for cycling. The Latgale lake district is far quieter and more untouched than the country's west; boats and kayaks can be rented at several shores. Locals call the lake 'Latgales jūra' (the sea of Latgale) — wind kicks up real chop, so mornings are the calmest for paddling.
