The best sport spots and adventures in Madagascar – travel tips, packing lists and first-hand experience from DOMISPORTS.
Diana · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: Apr–Dec
Madagascar's dive capital: warm water, reefs around offshore islets and whale sharks right off the coast from October to December. Entry-level diving and courses are as affordable as almost nowhere else in the Indian Ocean. Tanikely Marine Reserve for guaranteed turtle snorkeling.
Melaky · Climbing, Trekking · Best time: May–Oct
UNESCO World Heritage of razor-sharp limestone pinnacles laced with via ferratas, hanging bridges and gorges. The track from Morondava is only passable in the dry season — plan the approach seriously. Via Ferrata through the Tsingy — via ferrata in surreal landscape.
Ihorombe · Swimming, Trekking, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Oct
Sandstone canyons, grassland and natural pools — Madagascar's answer to the Grand Canyon. Day hikes with swim stops make Isalo the island's most relaxed introduction to trekking. Piscine Naturelle — swim in emerald pool in the middle of the canyon.
Alaotra-Mangoro · Hiking, Trekking · Best time: Apr–Dec
Montane rainforest three hours from Antananarivo — home of the indri, whose calls carry for kilometres. Short, well-marked trails make Andasibe the country's easiest rainforest entry point. Night walk for mouse lemurs and chameleons — from ~€10.
Analanjirofo · Snorkeling, Kayaking · Best time: Jun–Dec
Laid-back island off the east coast: reefs for snorkeling, mangroves for kayaking, and from July to September humpback whales pass right along the shore — one of the Indian Ocean's best viewing spots. Île aux Nattes — snorkeling and pure peace, no electricity.
Diana · Kitesurfing, Windsurfing · Best time: Apr–Nov
One of the Indian Ocean's most wind-reliable kite bays, just south of Diego Suarez: flat water behind the reef, waves outside, and regularly over 90% rideable days in season. Lodges sit right on the spot. Jun–Sep the Varatraza trade wind blows 25+ knots — beginners get the milder window in the shoulder months Apr/May and Oct/Nov.
Atsimo-Andrefana · Surfing, Snorkeling · Best time: Apr–Oct
Vezo fishing village in the deep southwest with boat-access reef peaks: world-class left Flame Balls for experts, forgiving waves for everyone else. Southwest swell and offshore easterly trades keep the season clean. Flame Balls is boat-access and experts-only — beginners paddle out at the mellower Jelly Babies reef.
Haute Matsiatra · Trekking, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Oct
Granite massif crowned by Pic Boby (2,658 m), the island's highest trekkable summit. Two- to four-day treks from the Namoly or Tsaranoro valley cross high plateaus that look more like Patagonia than Africa. Nights in the granite massif drop to around 0°C — pack a sub-zero sleeping bag even when it's 30°C below.
Analanjirofo · Kayaking, Snorkeling, Trekking · Best time: Jul–Dec
Madagascar's largest national park, where rainforest tumbles straight into the sea: sea-kayak tours along mangroves and coves, snorkeling in Tampolo marine park and jungle trails from the lodges. Boat access only — which is exactly why it stays empty. Jul–Sep humpbacks calve in Antongil Bay — plan the boat transfer from Maroantsetra.
Vatovavy · Hiking · Best time: Sep–Dec
Montane rainforest full of lemurs — the golden bamboo lemur was discovered here in 1986, which secured the park's existence. Well-built trails of every length, plus the hot springs in the valley town that give the park its name. Night walk along the park edge for chameleons and mouse lemurs — then soak in the village hot springs.
