Baa · Snorkeling, Scuba Diving · Best time: Jun–Nov
The world's most famous manta spectacle: in season, dozens of mantas gather in Hanifaru Bay to feed on plankton, sometimes joined by whale sharks. The UNESCO biosphere allows snorkelling only — yet you'll rarely get closer to these animals anywhere. Jun–Nov for manta season — UNESCO biosphere, snorkeling only allowed.
Gnaviyani · Scuba Diving · Best time: Year-round
The Maldives' only one-island atoll has become the tiger shark capital: you meet them on almost every dive right off the harbour reef, with thresher and hammerhead sharks passing through. Oceanic conditions — not for beginners. Tiger shark dive for experienced divers only — possible year-round.
Kaafu · Surfing · Best time: Mar–Oct
Surf capital of the local islands: Cokes breaks right off Thulusdhoo, a fast, hollow world-class right, while Chickens across the channel serves the long left. You stay in a guesthouse and paddle straight off the reef — boat optional. Budget guesthouse instead of resort — surf from ~€50/night.
Vaavu · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: Jan–Apr
Vaavu is the Maldives' channel playground: Fotteyo Kandu is a roughly 30-metre pass with soft-coral overhangs, swim-throughs and a current that carries you along like a conveyor belt. At night you head to the Alimatha jetty, where a feeding station pulls in dozens of nurse sharks, stingrays and trevally at close quarters. There are calm reefs for beginners too, but the signature dives clearly belong to people with drift experience. For the channel dives, the dive centres want AOW plus drift experience and around 30 logged dives — no logbook, no channel, you stay on the house reef.
Seenu · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Cycling · Best time: Nov–Apr
Deep south, just below the equator: the British Loyalty has been sitting between 16 and 33 metres inside the atoll since 1946 — an oil tanker that now draws bluefin trevally and turtles. At Manta Point off Muli Kolhu Faru, reef mantas show up all year round rather than in one short window. And once your tank is empty you rent a bike and ride the causeway from island to island. The Link Road ties Gan, Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Hithadhoo together over a good 15 kilometres of causeway — the one corner of the Maldives where you island-hop by bike.
Laamu · Surfing, Snorkeling · Best time: Mar–Oct
Laamu is Maldives surfing without the line-up crowd: Yin Yang is a long, fast right-hander that barrels on the outside, wraps into walls and bowls around the corner, then picks up speed again along the reef ledge. Add Machines with arguably the longest barrels in the country and Refugees, which breaks over brutally shallow, uneven reef. Not a place to learn — you want reef breaks in your legs before you paddle out. Yin Yang is at its best on a southeast swell over three metres with very light wind — otherwise it breaks on pretty much any tide.
Gaafu Dhaalu · Surfing, Snorkeling · Best time: Feb–Apr & Sep–Nov
The southernmost atolls pick up swell from just about every direction — Blue Bowls, Beacons, Tiger Stripes and Five Islands break harder and hollower than anything up north. You only get here by charter boat, but in return you surf waves where five people in the water counts as busy. Beacons runs over genuinely shallow reef: advanced and expert terrain. Day trips don't exist here: it's either a domestic flight south plus a charter boat, or roughly two days sailing from Malé.
Lhaviyani · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Kitesurfing · Best time: Dec–Apr
Lhaviyani is the atoll for people who like current: Kuredu Express at the channel mouth is a high-speed drift where you tuck behind the reef terraces and watch grey reef sharks, eagle rays and schools of barracuda stream past. Far calmer are the Kuredu Caves, where green turtles hang out under the overhangs from eight metres down, plus Fushifaru Thila as a manta cleaning station. From December to February there's wind over the lagoon too — kite session after the dive. Guides call Kuredu Caves the "Turtle Airport" — the green sea turtles come to fixed cleaning stations there and are correspondingly relaxed around divers.
