The Gobi is no empty sand sea but a shifting play of dunes, ice gorges and dinosaur dig sites: trek the singing dunes of Khongoryn Els and ride camels from camp to camp. Space you can physically feel. Camel trek through the Gobi — 3-5 days from Dalanzadgad.

The steppe's UNESCO culture valley: ride for days along the Orkhon past waterfall, monasteries and ger camps, sleeping with nomad families. Riding experience helps; a tough backside is mandatory. 3-day horse trek from Karakorum — real nomad camp.
Khövsgöl · Trekking, Kayaking, Horse Riding · Best time: Jun–Sep
Mongolia's 'blue pearl': a vast, crystal-clear mountain lake near the Siberian border, explored in summer by kayak, on horseback or along shoreline trails. Even July nights get chilly — but the starry sky is absurdly good. Ice trekking in winter — the lake freezes 1.5m thick.

Mongolia's alpine highlight: five glaciated peaks around the 4,000-metre mark, the Potanin Glacier and trekking routes where camels haul your gear. Malchin Peak needs no rope and rewards you with views into three countries; for Khüiten (4,374 m) you'll want crampons and glacier experience. Between stages you ride with Kazakh guides. You won't get into the park without a border-zone permit — sort it out in Ölgii beforehand.

Eight volcanic lakes at 2,400 metres in the Khangai Mountains that no vehicle can reach — this is Mongolia's classic horse trek. Three or four days in the saddle from the Orkhon Valley, with stretches of galloping across mountain meadows and camp at Shireet Lake. Works just as well as a multi-day hike with a pack horse. Cars give up on the final kilometres of bog and lava rock — which is exactly why you'll have the lakes almost to yourself.

Extinct volcano meets Great White Lake: a short morning climb puts you on the rim of the Khorgo crater, then you hike through lava fields down to the shore. Add horse riding in the forested hills, fishing for pike and perch, even a swim in high summer — all straight from your ger camp. The most laid-back sports stop on the Khangai loop. At 2,060 metres the lake only fully thaws in June — swimming and paddling pay off from July.

A wilderness three times the size of Yellowstone with barely a soul in it: in Khan Khentii you ride for days through larch forests and the headwater valleys of the Tuul, Kherlen and Onon. Base is the ger camp at Jalman Meadows, with a yak cart hauling your gear. Anglers cast for taimen here — the world's largest salmonid. The last eight kilometres to camp are on foot, horseback or by yak cart only — which reliably filters out the crowds.

The country's toughest trekking circuit: between the twin peaks of Kharkhiraa (4,037 m) and Turgen you cross 3,000-metre passes, glacier streams and high plateaus in full bloom. Eight to fourteen days fully self-supported, with camels from Khoton nomad families carrying the gear. Trekking doesn't get much lonelier. There's snow on the passes even in August — pack winter kit no matter what the calendar says.

Two neighbouring peaks in the far west: Kharkhiraa at 4,037 m and Turgen at 3,965 m, inside the protected area near the Russian border. The standard trek covers roughly 120 km in about 8 days, through glacial valleys and over two passes at 2,930 and 2,944 m. There are basically no marked trails, just wildflower meadows, glacier-fed rivers and snow leopard country — and days without seeing another hiker. Camels belonging to the local Khoton and Durvud families carry your luggage — you cover the 120 km with just a daypack.

The Darkhad Valley sits at around 1,600 m between the Ulaan Taiga and Khoridol Saridag ranges — you ride here because there simply are no roads. From the village of Tsagaannuur it's a 5 to 8 day round trip into the West Taiga to the Dukha, the country's last reindeer herders; 4 to 7 hours a day on small, stubborn Mongolian horses. You don't need riding experience, but you do need a tough backside. Tsagaannuur is where vehicles stop — and because the Dukha camps move constantly, the exact route is only settled on the morning you set off.
Ulaanbaatar · Hiking, Trekking · Best time: May–Oct
Ulaanbaatar's home mountain and one of the oldest protected areas in the world, under protection since 1778. The main summit, Tsetsee Gun (2,268 m), is about 8.5 km and 590 vertical metres through larch and pine forest, roughly six hours return. Perfect for your first day after landing: no special kit needed, and the whole city lies below you at the top. The classic is the traverse: up from Zuunmod past Manzushir Monastery and down the north side to Zaisan — no need to backtrack to a car.
