Spots in Myanmar

Inle-See

Shan · Cycling, Kayaking · Best time: Nov–Feb

The lake of the leg rowers: cycle past villages, vineyards and hot springs along the shore, and glide by kayak or boat between floating gardens and stilt houses. The morning belongs to the fishermen, the afternoon to you. In the cool dry season the light is at its finest. Rent bike in Nyaungshwe (~€3/day) for lake circuit.

Bagan

Mandalay · Cycling · Best time: Nov–Feb

Thousands of temples on a plain by the Irrawaddy: on an e-bike you weave along sandy tracks from pagoda to pagoda and find your own terrace for sunrise — away from the known spots, whole temple fields are yours. Dusty, magical, endlessly photogenic. Rent e-bike (~€5/day) — better than horse cart, more freedom.

Kalaw → Inle Trek

Shan · Trekking · Best time: Nov–Feb

Two to three days through the Shan highlands: the trek links hill villages, rice terraces and tea fields, with nights at Pa-O family homes or in a monastery. No technical ground, but long, sun-exposed stages. At the finish, Inle Lake waits as the reward. 2-day version from Kalaw — overnight with Pa-O families.

Hpa-An

Kayin · Kayaking, Hiking, Cycling · Best time: Nov–Feb

Karst country on the Thanlwin river: paddle through the Sadan cave to the far side of the mountain, cycle between rice paddies and limestone towers and climb Mount Zwegabin for sunrise. A place of simple means and big landscape. Sadan Cave boat ride — paddle through the cave to the other side.

Ngapali Beach

Rakhine · Cycling, Snorkeling · Best time: Nov–Feb

A palm beach without backdrop developments: at Ngapali you snorkel offshore reefs and cycle to fishing villages where the catch is still sorted on the sand. Not an action hotspot but the quiet close of a Myanmar loop — staying active included. By bike to local fishing villages — doesn't get more authentic.

Hsipaw

Shan · Trekking, Hiking, Cycling · Best time: Nov–Feb

Hsipaw is Myanmar's most laid-back trekking base: two days on foot through corn and rice fields up to the Palaung villages, 7–8 hours a day, night in a homestay. Want it shorter? Grab a bike for 500 kyat out to the Buddha hills, or walk the two hours to Nam Tuk waterfall. Best part: no compulsory guide, so you can cover a lot of this on your own. The two-day trek runs about 35,000 kyat including the homestay — you shouldn't be paying more.

Mergui-Archipel

Tanintharyi · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Kayaking · Best time: Dec–Apr

Some 800 islands in the Andaman Sea, and on most of them you're the first diver of the week. Diving and snorkelling run off liveaboards — reefs, pinnacles, and from February to May whale sharks and mantas cruise through. If you'd rather paddle, the sheltered channels between the islands are textbook sea-kayak terrain. Diving season runs December to April, but whale sharks and mantas only show from February — plan late if you want them.

Mount Victoria (Nat Ma Taung)

Chin · Trekking, Hiking · Best time: Nov–Mar

At 3,070 m, Nat Ma Taung is western Myanmar's highest mountain and one of Southeast Asia's ultra-prominent peaks — meaning it stands completely free, and from the top you see half the Chin range. The climb itself is pure hiking, no technical gear; the haul through the Chin Hills to Kanpetlet is the real test. High up it turns alpine: cloud forest, rhododendrons and birds you won't find anywhere else. February and March are the driest months — September dumps over 330 mm of rain up here.

Putao

Kachin · Trekking, Mountaineering, Hiking · Best time: Nov–Mar

Putao is Myanmar's doorway to the Himalaya: multi-day treks head into the mountains west of town, and on clear days Hkakabo Razi and other snow-capped peaks line the horizon. Not a weekend trip — guide, permit and at least a week are mandatory. In return: forest, suspension bridges and valleys where you'll barely meet another soul. Putao depends entirely on air access and commercial flights only run seasonally — always build a buffer into your return.

Pyin Oo Lwin

Mandalay · Cycling, Hiking · Best time: Nov–Feb

At 1,070 m, Pyin Oo Lwin is central Myanmar's high-altitude address: cool, green, and the road up from Mandalay is the only real climb for miles. Up top you rent a bike for 1,200–2,000 kyat and roll out to Shan villages and waterfalls. Anisakan Falls is the best short hike: 35–45 minutes steeply down into the gorge to a three-tier waterfall — and back up, which is the part that hurts. Winter nights drop below 10 °C — by central Myanmar standards you actually need a jacket here.
