Volcano boarding on the black cone: carry your board up the active Cerro Negro and shoot down the ash slope — overalls and goggles are mandatory, the adrenaline rises on its own. A crater lake with bath-warm, clear water: swim far out, SUP above the sunken caldera and then settle into a lakeside hammock. The perfect recovery spot between volcano tours and surf legs — calm, cheap, uncomplicated. Crystal-clear crater lake — perfect to cool off after volcano tours.

Nicaragua's surf HQ on the Emerald Coast: a mellow beach break off Playa Santana to practise on, and right next door the Outer Reef that only experienced surfers should touch. Wind off Lake Nicaragua blows offshore almost daily, so waves stand up clean here while everywhere else turns to mush. From April to October the south swells roll in and it gets serious. Popoyo Outer Reef is an experts-only reef wave — to practise, head to the Playa Santana beach break about 20 minutes away.

The Río Coco has carved 120 to 150 metres down into the rock here, and the only way through is scrambling, hiking and swimming whole sections. In between you jump off rock ledges into the water — that's what makes the day. Not a trip for non-swimmers, but if you swim confidently you need no other experience. The entrance is about 13 km west of Somoto town towards El Espino — the guides come from the villages right at the canyon.

More than 365 islets in Lake Cocibolca, formed when Mombacho dumped half its flank into the water. By kayak you paddle for hours through narrow channels between the islands — flat water, barely any current, fine even on your very first outing. Still got legs afterwards? The Mombacho crater loop trail (1,344 m) is half an hour away. Get out early: the easterly wind on Lake Cocibolca picks up in the afternoon and pushes you around in open water.

A car-free Caribbean island a good 13 km northeast of Big Corn — three square kilometres, no roads. Underwater there's intact coral reef with nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays, barracuda and green sea turtles, and visibility is genuinely good in the dry season. Perfect if you want to do your Open Water here or just head out with mask and fins. There are no cars on Little Corn — you carry your bags from the jetty to your place yourself, so pack light.
Chinandega · Hiking, Trekking · Best time: Nov–Apr
859 metres, but they bite: the climb pulls up through dry forest to the crater rim, where a turquoise lake sits in the caldera left by Nicaragua's most violent eruption in 1835. From the top you look across the Gulf of Fonseca into El Salvador and Honduras at once. The altitude isn't the hard part, the heat is — which is why you start before sunrise. Set off at dawn — the view across the Gulf of Fonseca to El Salvador and Honduras is only clear before the midday haze.
