Spots in Philippines

Manila

Luzon · Sightseeing, Stopover · Best time: Nov–May

Honestly: Manila is a hub, not a destination. If you have time between flights, check out Intramuros — the old walled city is best explored by bike — and eat your way through the street food. Then move on to where the Philippines really happen. Connect onwards same day — Manila is just a hub.

El Nido

Palawan · Snorkeling, Island hopping · Best time: Nov–May

Limestone karst, lagoons, hidden beaches: in the Bacuit archipelago you jump off the outrigger straight into snorkel-clear water, and a kayak gets you into corners no engine is allowed. Ridiculously beautiful — and a proper paddling workout if you want one. Tour A vs C — A for lagoons, C for remote beaches.

Coron / Palawan

Palawan · Wreck diving, Snorkeling · Best time: Nov–May

A fleet sunk in World War II rests here at diveable depth — world-class wreck diving at fair prices. In between: freshwater lakes with warm thermoclines and reefs for easy snorkel days. If you don't have your license yet, this is the place to earn it. Dive certification much cheaper here than in Europe.

Bohol

Visayas · Snorkeling, Sightseeing · Best time: Nov–May

Bohol combines what would elsewhere be separate trips: the iconic cone hills inland in the morning, then snorkeling off Panglao in the afternoon, where turtle encounters are close to guaranteed. Short distances, low prices — ideal for a first Philippines run. Visit the Chocolate Hills at sunrise.

Oslob / Cebu

Visayas · Whale shark snorkeling, Canyoneering · Best time: Nov–May

Cebu's south is action country: canyoneering has you jumping and sliding through turquoise pools down to the falls — the real star of the day. The whale shark sighting is near-guaranteed, but the crowds and feeding are controversial — go early and make up your own mind. Combine Oslob + Kawasan Falls in one day trip.

Siargao

Mindanao · Surfing · Best time: Sep–Nov

The surfing capital of the Philippines: at the famous house reef, hollow waves break over a shallow slab — expert terrain — while mellower reef spots nearby make your start possible with a guide and boat. Between sessions: scooters, palm roads, island time. Cloud 9 — world-famous reef break, best Sept–Nov.
