Spots in Portugal

Nazaré

Leiria · Surfing · Best time: Oct–Mar

An underwater canyon stacks Atlantic swell into record-breaking waves at Praia do Norte. For mere mortals it's a spectator sport — and worth every detour precisely for that. Watch from Forte de São Miguel — surfing only for pros.

Ericeira

Lisboa · Surfing · Best time: Year-round

Europe's first World Surfing Reserve: within a few kilometres, reef and beach breaks stack up for every level, from gentle sand-bottom waves to a world-class right. All wrapped in a whitewashed fishing village that runs on surf time. Ribeira d'Ilhas for intermediates, Coxos experts only.

Algarve

Faro · Kayaking, Snorkeling, SUP, Hiking · Best time: Year-round

A sandstone coast straight off a postcard: between Lagos and Albufeira you paddle through caves and rock arches, snorkel calm coves and hike the clifftop paths above. The Fisherman's Trail serves up stages right along the cliff edge — even in winter. Kayak to Benagil Cave at 8am — it gets packed later.

Peniche

Leiria · Surfing, Kitesurfing · Best time: Year-round

A peninsula with 360-degree options: beaches facing every direction mean there's almost always a rideable wave — from gentle beginner peaks to the barrels of Supertubos, a World Tour regular. On windy afternoons, the kiters take over. Supertubos at high tide, Baleal at low tide — use both.

Madeira

Madeira · Hiking, Scuba Diving, MTB, Paragliding · Best time: Year-round

A near-vertical island with a year-round climate: levada paths thread through laurel forest and tunnels, trails plunge from 1,800 metres towards the sea, and the clear Atlantic waits for divers. The weather shifts with every contour line — pack layers. PR1 Vereda do Areeiro runs over ridges and through tunnels — demanding.

Lissabon / Carcavelos

Lissabon · Surfing · Best time: Year-round

A wide beach break in front of the São Julião fortress: Carcavelos catches plenty of swell yet usually stays forgiving — which is why the bay is the capital's learning ground. After your session you're back in Lisbon's alleys in time for dinner. City surfing with train access — ideal for beginners.

Sagres

Algarve · Surfing, Scuba Diving · Best time: Year-round

Europe's wild, wind-carved southwest corner: beaches facing west and south catch different swells, so a clean wave is almost always breaking somewhere. Underwater, rocky reefs and caves wait in the clear Atlantic — don't forget the wetsuit. Southwest tip — works in almost any wind direction.

Azoren / São Miguel

Azoren · Hiking, Scuba Diving · Best time: May–Oct

A volcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic: trails loop crater lakes like Sete Cidades, while underwater you'll find lava arches, baitballs and, with luck, mobula rays. Afterwards, recover in natural hot springs — a full-service island for complete athletes. Crater lakes, whale watching & hot springs.

Serra da Estrela

Zentralportugal · Skiing, Hiking · Best time: Dec–Mar

A granite highland of glacial valleys and rock towers: when snow falls in winter, Portugal's only piste days happen here — the rest of the year the plateau belongs to hikers and trail runners. The weather turns fast, so plan in reserves. Portugal's highest range — the country's only ski area.

Lagos

Algarve · Kayaking, Scuba Diving · Best time: May–Oct

A limestone backdrop within arm's reach: from the town beach you paddle straight to the arches, grottoes and hidden coves of the rocky coast. Dive centres in the marina run trips to nearby reefs — ideal for your first breaths underwater, too. Ponta da Piedade — grottoes best explored by kayak.

Porto / Matosinhos

Norte · Surfing · Best time: Year-round

Northern Portugal surfs at Matosinhos: the long city beach soaks up plenty of swell and usually breaks gently enough for beginners, with surf schools lining the promenade. Afterwards, francesinha and port wine — recovery, Porto style. Reliable beachbreaks with metro access.

Arrábida

Setúbal · Hiking, Scuba Diving · Best time: May–Oct

A green limestone ridge above white-sand coves: in the protected marine park you dive and snorkel unusually clear water, while trails up top cross fragrant maquis with views to Setúbal. The calm counterpoint to the Algarve — an hour from Lisbon. Nature park with crystal water near Lisbon.

Vale de Moses (Oleiros)

Castelo Branco, Zentralportugal · Yoga, Hiking, Meditation · Best time: Apr–Nov

The retreat lies in the forested mountain valleys near Amieira in the Oleiros district, housed in rustic stone cottages and bell tents. Stays run by the week, the standard Monday-to-Saturday block covering five nights. The day follows a set rhythm: 9am group programme, 10.30am breakfast, 5pm afternoon programme, with pine-forest paths and natural river pools in between; food is vegetarian to vegan. You do not book with the house: Vale de Moses hires out its weeks between April and November to outside retreat leaders, and some dates are private events — enquire with the respective leader.
