Spots in Switzerland

Interlaken

Berner Oberland · Paragliding, Canyoning, Rafting, Skiing · Best time: Year-round

Europe's adventure hub between two lakes: tandem flights above the Aare, canyoning in the Bernese Oberland gorges, rafting on the Lütschine and Simme — and in winter the Jungfrau ski areas at the door. Almost everything runs guided, no experience needed. Tandem paragliding from Beatenberg — best view of Eiger trio.

Zermatt

Wallis · Hiking, Skiing, Mountaineering, MTB · Best time: Year-round

A car-free mountaineering village beneath the most famous peak in the Alps: glacier skiing 365 days a year, high trails with four-thousander panoramas and singletrack running right up to the north faces. If you're ready, rope up with a guide towards the Hörnli ridge. 5 Lakes Walk for the perfect Matterhorn reflection photo.

Lauterbrunnen

Berner Oberland · Hiking, Paragliding · Best time: May–Oct

A glacial trough with 72 waterfalls: between sheer walls you hike up-valley towards Stechelberg or climb to the balcony paths of Wengen and Mürren. Paragliders circle all day — this valley is one of the great flying stages of the Alps. Schilthorn instead of Jungfraujoch — half the price, equally epic.

Engadin / St. Moritz

Graubünden · Hiking, Skiing, Cross-country skiing, MTB · Best time: Year-round

A high valley at 1,800 metres with a light of its own: pistes, endless cross-country tracks and frozen lakes in winter; high trails between larches and glacier views in summer. The thin-air altitude training comes free. Muottas Muragl panorama trail — see Engadin from above.

Aletsch-Gletscher

Wallis · Hiking, Trekking · Best time: Jun–Sep

The longest glacier in the Alps as your trailside companion: from the viewpoints above Riederalp and Bettmeralp you walk for hours along the ice stream — UNESCO World Heritage within reach of the lifts. Guided tours will even take you onto the ice itself. Panorama trail from Bettmerhorn — glacier view without effort.

Verzasca-Tal

Tessin · Canyoning, Hiking, Swimming · Best time: May–Oct

Emerald water over white granite: in the Verzasca valley you swim polished rock pools, run guided canyoning lines and hike old mule paths from village to village. The river has real power — swim only where the locals do. Ponte dei Salti — Switzerland's most iconic stone bridge.

Grindelwald

Berner Oberland · Hiking, Skiing, Climbing · Best time: Year-round

Base camp beneath the Eiger north face: via ferratas and high trails facing the most famous wall in the Alps, and in winter the ski slopes towards Kleine Scheidegg. The railways handle your approaches — the scenery starts from the first bend. Eiger north face views — don't miss the First Cliff Walk.

Verbier

Wallis · Skiing, MTB · Best time: Dec–Apr

The freeride hub of the western Alps: well-known lines off Mont Fort, the Freeride World Tour finale on the Bec des Rosses and a lift network running deep into the 4 Vallées. In summer the bike park takes over — steep, dusty, fast. Freeride legend in winter, bike park in summer.

Davos

Graubünden · Skiing, Hiking · Best time: Nov–Apr

A high-altitude Alpine town with five ski areas around it: from the cult classic Parsenn to quiet panorama trails above the Landwasser valley. The scale is properly alpine, yet everything is well developed — ideal for long days outside. One of the Alps' biggest ski areas (Parsenn) + panorama trails.

Laax / Flims

Graubünden · Skiing, MTB · Best time: Dec–Apr

A freestyle stronghold with a giant superpipe and park lines for every level — Europe's snowboard elite trains here. In summer you roll flow trails through the Ruinaulta, the Rhine gorge right below the ski area. Switzerland's best snowpark + flow trails.

Mürren / Jungfrau

Berner Oberland · Hiking, Skiing · Best time: Year-round

A mountain village on a rock balcony, reachable only by cableway and train: high trails with views of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau start at the door, and in winter the ski area drops from the Schilthorn back towards the village. Once the day-trippers leave, Mürren belongs to the mountains again. Car-free mountain village facing the three giants.

Ticino / Lugano

Tessin · SUP, Climbing · Best time: Year-round

Southern Switzerland with palm-tree flair: SUP on Lake Lugano against a Mediterranean backdrop, plus world-renowned granite boulders in the Ticino valleys — bouldering in winter, lake time in summer. Two sporting worlds barely an hour apart. Southern vibe: palms, bouldering in Val Bavona, lake SUP.

Saas-Fee

Wallis · Mountaineering, Skiing, Via Ferrata

A glacier village above four valley communes, car-free and ringed by 13 four-thousanders. The Metro Alpin funicular runs to Mittelallalin at 3,445 m; from there the route crosses the Feejoch at 3,807 m and reaches the Allalinhorn (4,027 m) in about two hours — no climbing involved, sure footing and a mountain guide are enough. Allow at least another two hours for the descent on the same line. If you would rather stay on rock, the Mittaghorn via ferrata is a hard route of 10.11 km and 4:30 hours. From the first overnight stay in the Saas valley the mountain railways and PostBus are included — only the Metro Alpin section up to Mittelallalin, where the Allalinhorn tour starts, costs extra.

Engelberg

Zentralschweiz · Skiing, Snowboarding · Best time: Oct–May

A ski area with 82 kilometres of piste between the village and the Titlis glacier, open from October to May. Five freeride descents carry their own names — Laub, Sulz, Steinberg, Steintäli and Galtiberg — and all are reached by lift. Alongside the 12-kilometre run from Titlis, the Jochstock descent drops 1,500 vertical metres. Zurich is a good hour away by car, and the Titlis cable car takes 30 minutes from the village into high-alpine terrain. The uninterrupted run from Titlis ends right in the village: 12 kilometres and 2,000 vertical metres in one go — plan it as the last run of the day, not the warm-up.

Adelboden

Berner Oberland · Skiing, Snowboarding, Hiking

The giant slalom on the Chuenisbärgli starts at 1,730 m and finishes at 1,310 m: 1,290 m of course, 420 vertical metres, gradients up to 60 per cent and 50 to 55 gates. The slalom next to it measures 622 m over 211 vertical metres. Adelboden is one of three places — alongside Wengen and Kitzbühel — that have staged races every year since the FIS World Cup began in 1967; the World Cup weekend traditionally falls in January. On the World Cup weekend in January there is no parking in Adelboden — leave the car at the Reichenbach park-and-ride (15 francs per day) and take the World Cup shuttle, about 45 minutes.

Lenzerheide

Graubünden · MTB, Skiing · Best time: May–Oct

The Bike Kingdom Park on the Rothorn has five freeride tracks: FLOWline, PRIMEline, SHOREline, STYLEline and the more demanding STRAIGHTline. A helmet is compulsory, gloves and body armour strongly recommended; staying on the marked trails and leaving shortcuts alone is part of the Code of Ride. The park runs from mid-May to the end of October; in June the World Cup weekend and its build-up close it for a few days. The linked Arosa–Lenzerheide–Chur area is served by 12 mountain railways; in winter the main season runs from 19 December to 29 March. Check the operating hours before you travel: in June the park closes for the World Cup weekend and its build-up, and in high summer the Rothorn 1 gondola runs 'Late Shred' until 7.30 pm instead of 5 pm — enough time for two extra descents.

Zinal

Wallis · Trail Running, Skiing

Finish of the Sierre-Zinal mountain race: roughly 31 kilometres with 2,200 metres of climbing and 1,100 of descent; 2026 saw the 53rd edition. The village sits at the head of the Val d'Anniviers below the Weisshorn and the Zinalrothorn. The junior race Chandolin-Zinal covers 19 kilometres with 800 metres of ascent. In winter a 3-kilometre cable car has linked Zinal with Grimentz since 2014: together 115 kilometres of piste between 1,600 and 2,900 m on 21 lifts. Sierre-Zinal always starts in Sierre the day before the second Sunday in August; under 4:30 hours you enter as 'Coureurs', above it you run as 'Touristes' with an official time but no ranking.

Kandersteg

Berner Oberland · Via Ferrata, Hiking, Skiing · Best time: May–Oct

The via ferrata up to the Allmenalp is graded KS4, difficult and very exposed: 650 metres in total, 550 metres of ascent, four ladders, two Nepalese bridges and a tyrolean traverse, plus two to three hours of climbing past the four waterfalls of the Allmibach. The 'Freude herrscht' variant built in 2020 sits above it at KS4+: 240 metres, 150 vertical metres, mostly vertical rock. On foot, five UNESCO World Heritage circuits of 1.8 to 3.5 kilometres ring Kandersteg, with 8.9 kilometres leading into the Gasterntal. Via ferrata sets are rented at the valley station of the Allmenalp cable car, last issue at 4 pm — turn up later and you are left without kit.

Leukerbad

Wallis · Via Ferrata, Hiking · Best time: Jul–Sep

Above Leukerbad rises the Gemmiwand, and in it hangs the Daubenhorn via ferrata: 9.25 kilometres, around 1,250 vertical metres, roughly eight hours, graded K5–K6. It uses 2,000 metres of steel cable and 216 metres of ladders, some overhanging; the route ends on the summit of the Daubenhorn (2,941 m), and the descent crosses the small Daubenhorn glacier to the Lämmerenboden and back to the Gemmi cable car on a hiking path. One size down is the Gemmiwand adventure ferrata, K3–K4 over 0.8 kilometres and 2:30 hours. The Daubenhorn via ferrata only opens in early to mid-July depending on weather and snowmelt — check the condition with the Gemmi cable car before you travel.

Grimsel / Handegg

Berner Oberland · Climbing, Bouldering · Best time: Jun–Oct

Granite on several levels. Above the Grimselsee lie the glacier-polished slabs of the 'Eldorado' area, where the Remy brothers made the first ascent of 'Motörhead' in 1983. In the Aare valley between the Räterichsbodensee and the Mittagsflue some 40 areas and sectors range from the Azalee Beach family crag to lines you have to protect yourself. The Wendenstöcke chain in the Gadmental runs about 10 kilometres and holds roughly 130 multi-pitch routes. For bouldering, the 'Kristallweg' blocks lie in the forest along the path from Hotel Handeck towards the Grimsel pass. The routes on the Oelberg beside the Gelmer funicular are currently reachable only from the funicular's valley station — the approach from the Handeck 1 power station is closed for construction.

Magic Wood

Graubünden · Bouldering, Climbing

A boulder field entirely in forest, in the 'Paré da Miezgi' area beside the Ragn da Ferrera: roughly 250 metres wide and 500 metres long. The commune of Ferrera opened up access with a bridge. If you do not camp on the overnight site, you sleep at the Gasthaus Edelweiss in Ausserferrera or at the Alpenrose in Innerferrera. Access is via the A13, exit 26 'Rofla / Avers-Juf / Ferrera'. Crash pads and climbing shoes are rented at Bodhi Camping, which also has the free car park — by PostBus, get off at 'Ferrera, Schmelzi'.

Val Bregaglia

Graubünden · Bouldering, Climbing · Best time: Jun–Oct

Two boulder parks in the Bregaglia valley, both free. Stampa holds more than 30 blocks with over 100 routes, most between 5a and 6b, on grippy granite. Up at the reservoir, the Albigna boulder park adds four sectors with around 50 blocks and nearly 100 climbed routes from Fb 5a to 7b+/7c; crash pads are rented at the Capanna Albigna. The Albigna cable car runs mid-June to mid-October every 15 minutes, 7.00 to 11.30 and 13.15 to 16.45, with parking at Pranzaira. In Stampa the only car park is at the Palazzo Castelmur; from there the path runs west towards the church of San Pietro — do not cut across the pastures.

Schweizerischer Nationalpark

Graubünden · Hiking, Trekking · Best time: May–Nov

21 marked hiking trails in a reserve where nature is left to itself. The paths are normally open from mid-May to mid-November; the exact dates depend on the weather and on the altitude of each individual trail. If you stay longer than a day, you sleep at the Chamanna Cluozza in the middle of the park. Animals, plants, wood and stones stay where they are, and fires are banned because of the wildfire risk. You may not step off the marked paths anywhere and rest spots are marked with posts — plan your breaks along the route, and dogs stay outside even on a lead.

Alpstein / Wasserauen

Appenzell · Hiking, Climbing · Best time: May–Oct

Limestone mountains between Appenzell and Lake Constance. From Wasserauen the cable car to the Ebenalp runs every 15 minutes or on demand and closes only in April and December for servicing; up top are the Äscher mountain inn clamped to the rock face and the Wildkirchli caves. Climbers find beginner routes at the Meglisalp crag and in the 'Zisler' area on the Ebenalp, and more advanced lines on the south walls between Chlus and Äscher. Most Alpstein mountain inns are open from May to the end of October. The Säntis cable car has been shut down for renewal since 1 May 2026 and stays out of service until late autumn 2026 — this season the Säntis is only reachable on foot.

Champéry

Wallis · MTB, Skiing, Via Ferrata

A village at 1,050 metres below the Dents du Midi and one of the Swiss members of the Portes du Soleil, a network of 12 places across Switzerland and France. In summer it holds five bike parks, in winter 600 kilometres of piste on 196 lifts under a single ski pass. Locally, the Via Ferrata de Tière covers 5.89 kilometres in about three hours at medium difficulty. Tourism here is old: the Hotel 'Dents du Midi' opened in 1857. The Pass'Portes du Soleil mountain-bike weekend falls in late June each year (2026: 26 to 28 June) — you sign up for one of the three days and can start from several different stations.

Basel

Basel-Stadt · Swimming, Cycling · Best time: Jun–Sep

The Rhine runs straight through the city and you swim downstream with the current. Clothes and phone go into a waterproof Wickelfisch dry bag; bathing houses sit at the Johanniterbrücke and in the Breite quarter, and information boards along the bank set out the rules. Once a year, in August, the SLRG Basel section runs the official Basel Rhine swim. National cycle route 2, the Rhine Route (430 km from Andermatt), also ends here. After a long spell of bad weather, stay out of the water — the Basel-Stadt cantonal laboratory explicitly advises against it; on normal days the bathing house at the Johanniterbrücke is where you get out.

Bern

Kanton Bern · Swimming, Cycling · Best time: May–Sep

The Aare loops around the old town, and the city treats swimming in it like traffic: from the Schönausteg onwards the swimmers' exit at the Marzilibad and the boat exit at the Dalmazibrücke are signed separately, and since the city council's 2021 decision the remaining distance to them is marked several times over; on days with heavy boat traffic security staff direct boaters at the Dalmazibrücke. The Marzilibad opens in mid-May; early-morning swimming runs from 1 June to 31 August from 7 a.m. National cycle route 8, the Aare Route (315 km), also passes through the city. Get in at the Schönausteg and drift down to the Marzilibad — the city has signposted the remaining distance to the exits several times over, and the Marzilibad exit is not the one to miss.

Solothurn

Kanton Solothurn · Swimming, Cycling · Best time: Jun–Sep

The Aare runs through this baroque town with a gentle current — not whitewater, but a calm drift from the Badi down to the Regio Energie jetty, where the Solheure sits on the bank and hands out Wickelfisch dry bags. Solothurn also sits on national cycle route 8, the Aare Route (315 km from Oberwald to Koblenz). Get in at the Badi and let the gentle current carry you through the old town to the Regio Energie jetty; the Wickelfisch dry bag for clothes and phone is available at the Solheure on the bank.

Zürich

Kanton Zürich · Swimming, Surfing · Best time: May–Sep

The Oberer Letten river pool sits by Limmatplatz in the middle of the city: free entry, swimmers only, a 400-metre swim lane in the Limmat and a 2-metre diving board. Beach volleyball and boules courts are on the opposite bank. Zurich runs 18 summer pools in total; the Oberer and Unterer Letten river pools close on 20 September. For a standing wave, the city also has an artificial Citywave installation. Entry is free but swimmers only: the 400-metre stretch at the Oberer Letten river pool runs with the current, and you walk back along the deck.

Flüelen / Urnersee

Kanton Uri · Windsurfing, Running · Best time: Apr–Aug

Lake Uri is the southern arm of Lake Lucerne, hemmed in by steep flanks. The surf station at Unter Winkel 11 in Flüelen rents gear and runs windsurf and wing-foil courses at every level; it closes at the end of August because the thermals stop after that. Föhn forms when strong southerly winds spill over the Alps, and it arrives here gusty. An 8-kilometre shore path with 50 metres of climbing leads from the village to Isleten over wooden bridges, boardwalks and gravel beaches. The surf station only runs from mid-April to the end of August because the thermals drop off in September — Föhn days, by contrast, push strong, gusty wind down the Reuss valley axis.

Estavayer-le-Lac

Kanton Freiburg · Swimming, Sailing · Best time: Jun–Sep

Estavayer sits on Lake Neuchâtel and has sandy beaches. Switzerland's longest water-ski lift runs at the Nouvelle Plage outside town, alongside a restaurant and campsite. Sailing boats and excursion vessels dock in the harbour. The reed belts of the Grande Cariçaie can be paddled by canoe in the company of a biologist. The sandy beach is at the Nouvelle Plage outside town; Switzerland's longest water-ski lift runs right beside it, so stay clear of its lane when you swim.

Genf

Kanton Genf · Swimming, Yoga · Best time: Year-round

The Bains des Pâquis sit on a jetty in Lake Geneva at Quai du Mont-Blanc 30, with the Jet d'Eau in view across the bay, and open daily; hours depend on the weather. Besides lake access there are swimming lessons, yoga and massages, the hammam and Turkish bath run all year, and the sauna is the winter draw. Current water and air temperatures are posted live on the operating association's site. Reachable on foot, by bike, by boat or on bus lines 1 and 25. The baths sit on the jetty at Quai du Mont-Blanc 30 and open year-round — in winter people come for the sauna and hammam, not for the lake.

Biel / Bielersee

Kanton Bern / Seeland · Cycling, SUP, Swimming · Best time: Apr–Oct

The loop around Lake Biel starts and ends in Biel, covers 43 kilometres with 148 metres of climbing and descent each, and is rated moderate; April to October is the best window. St. Peter's Island in the lake is partly a nature reserve, and the northern shore is vineyard country with the wine villages of Twann and Ligerz. Stand-up paddling is done on the lake, and cycling and inline-skating routes ring it. National cycle route 8, the Aare Route, also touches Biel/Bienne. The lake loop is 43 kilometres with 148 metres of climbing and is rated moderate — bikes and e-bikes can be hired at Biel station, and there are swim stops along the way.
