Spots in Serbia

Tara Nationalpark

Westserbien · Rafting, Hiking, Kayaking · Best time: May–Sep

A forested plateau above the Drina gorge: rafting alternates calm stretches with splashy rapids, while trails on land lead to viewpoints like the famous Banjska Stena. A lot of nature for very little money. Rafting on the Drina from ~€25/person — unbeatable value.

Belgrad

Belgrad · Cycling, Kayaking, Running · Best time: May–Sep

Two rivers, one training city: on Ada Ciganlija you run, row and paddle around a dedicated recreational lake, while the Danube cycle path runs right through town. Afterwards Belgrade's nightlife awaits — balance is up to you. Danube bike path through Belgrade — flat and historic.

Zlatibor

Westserbien · Hiking, MTB, Skiing · Best time: Year-round

A gentle highland plateau with a year-round programme: in summer you ride and hike across wide meadow ridges, in winter the lifts run at Tornik. Sitting around 1,000 metres, the climate stays pleasant — ideal for easy training weeks. Gold Gondola (9 km) — longest panoramic gondola in the Balkans.

Đerdap / Eisernes Tor

Bor · Kayaking, Hiking · Best time: May–Sep

Here the Danube squeezes through one of Europe's mightiest gorges: paddle beneath rock walls bearing Roman traces and hike to viewpoints high above the river. Epic scenery, surprisingly few visitors. Boat ride through the gorge — Trajan's tablet from Roman times.

Kopaonik

Raška · Skiing, Hiking, MTB · Best time: Dec–Apr

Serbia's biggest ski area — and a relaxed hiking and biking spot in summer: wide pistes, modern lifts and prices that make the Alps look absurd. Perfect for learning to ski or racking up cheap mileage. Ski pass from ~€20/day — fraction of Alpine prices.

Uvac-Canyon

Westserbien · Kayaking, Hiking, Cave tours · Best time: May–Oct

You paddle through emerald meanders while griffon vultures with three-metre wingspans circle overhead — sounds cheesy, but that's exactly how it is. The reservoir is flat water, so kayaking works without prior experience; guided boat and ice-cave tours leave from the dam. The postcard angle is up at the Molitva viewpoint. The hike up to the Molitva viewpoint takes about 45 minutes — boat tour below plus the view from above fit easily into one day.

Stara Planina

Zaječar · Hiking, MTB, Skiing · Best time: Jun–Sep

Serbia's rooftop: from the Babin Zub lodge it's a steady three-hour-plus climb over the ski slope and along the ridge to Midžor (2,169 m) — constantly uphill but never technical. In winter one of the country's most modern ski areas runs here; in summer hikers and bikers share the slopes. And it's far quieter than Kopaonik. You can drive right up to the Babin Zub mountain lodge — from there, Serbia's highest peak is a day objective with zero scrambling.

Ibar-Tal / Maglič

Raška · Rafting, Kayaking, Hiking · Best time: May–Sep

Easy whitewater with a history backdrop: 25 kilometres of drifting, paddling and splashing from the medieval Maglič fortress down to Kraljevo. The rapids are tame enough for your very first rafting day, but the river is still a blast. The short hike up to the castle is part of the ritual before you put in. During the midsummer 'Veseli Spust' over 10,000 participants float from Maglič to Kraljevo — pick a different weekend if you want a quiet run.

Fruška Gora

Vojvodina · MTB, Hiking, Trail Running · Best time: Apr–Oct

Flowy singletrack through dense deciduous forest, with 15th-century monasteries and vineyards in between — Fruška Gora is Vojvodina's local mountain right outside Novi Sad. The hills are gentle (high point 539 m), but the trail network is huge and neatly mapped on Trailforks and Komoot. Strong running and hiking terrain too. The trailhead hub is Iriški Venac by the TV tower — half an hour from Novi Sad, with the marked routes fanning out from there.

Sićevo-Schlucht

Nišava · Climbing, Paragliding, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Oct

Limestone walls right above the Nišava: sport routes across many grades plus trad lines up to 200 metres, just half an hour from Niš. On top of that, one of the region's established paragliding launch sites. Between sessions you hike the 17-kilometre gorge, now a protected nature reserve. The paragliding launch sits at 1,020 m with the landing 700 vertical metres below — the thermals here have hosted competitions since 1995.
