Muizenberg's gentle, wide beach break is the classic place for your first wave — schools and rentals sit right on the promenade. Behind it, the Cape Peninsula offers trails and MTB routes for the days without swell. Big-wave spots like Dungeons stay with the pros. Muizenberg for surf beginners, Dungeons for big wave pros only.
Mpumalanga · Safari · Best time: May–Oct
Self-drive safari at your own pace: plan routes between camps, be at the gate before sunrise and read the bushveld hour by hour. In the dry season animals gather at the waterholes — prime time for sightings. Guided walks also take you into the bush on foot. Be at the gate at 5:30am — best sightings at sunrise.

Eastern Cape · Surfing · Best time: Jun–Sep
Supertubes is rated one of the fastest, most perfect right-handers in the world — in winter it links up sections you otherwise only see in contest clips. The water is cold, the line-up competitive. Less radical sections and beach breaks keep intermediates happy too. Winter (Jun–Sep) brings the most powerful swells — 4/3 wetsuit.
Eastern Cape · Zipline, Hiking, Bungee jumping · Best time: Year-round
Coastal forest, gorges and suspension bridges: in Tsitsikamma you hike to the Storms River mouth and zipline through the canopy — and if you want the kick, the Bloukrans bridge bungee drops more than 200 metres. Mild climate all year, road-trip-grade infrastructure. Tsitsikamma canopy tour + Storms River Mouth hike.
Eastern Cape · Hiking, Surfing, Trekking · Best time: Apr–Sep
Hike for days along a coast without roads: the route follows cliff paths and empty beaches, with nights in Xhosa villages — simple lodgings, honest food. In between you surf undeveloped beach breaks. Not a comfort trek, but South Africa at its most unfiltered. Wild Coast Meander (5 days) — South Africa's most authentic trek.
Westkap · Bouldering, Climbing, Hiking · Best time: May–Sep
Rocklands is a household name among boulderers: orange-red sandstone with perfect friction, thousands of problems across all grades and desert sky above the crash pads. Climbing happens in the South African winter, when conditions bite. Add hikes to rock arches and San rock art. Rocklands — sandstone bouldering above 1,000 m, season Jun–Sep.
Westkap · Hiking, Climbing · Best time: Year-round
The city's mountain, cable-car excuse included: Platteklip Gorge climbs steeply to the plateau in two to three hours, while climbers take the sandstone faces directly. Up top, paths run along the table rim with views over city and Atlantic. Weather flips fast — the famous cloud tablecloth arrives unannounced. Up Platteklip Gorge, down the cableway — or reverse.
KwaZulu-Natal · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: Year-round
Diving on some of the world's southernmost coral reefs: colourful stands from Two Mile to Nine Mile Reef, plus dolphins, rays and seasonal whale sharks. Entry is by rubber duck through the surf — an experience in itself. Courses and camps keep the place beginner-friendly. Africa's northernmost coral reefs — whale sharks in season.
Westkap · Kitesurfing, Windsurfing · Best time: Oct–Mar
When the Cape Doctor blows, Big Bay and Blouberg turn into a kite stadium: strong summer wind, Atlantic waves and Table Mountain as the backdrop. Conditions are sporty — waves, chop, plenty of traffic on the water. Schools work the more sheltered corners of the bay. The 'Cape Doctor' wind makes Blouberg a kite mecca.
KwaZulu-Natal · Scuba Diving · Best time: Year-round
A sunken reef five kilometres offshore, famous for cage-free shark encounters: tiger and bull sharks depending on season, plus ragged-tooth sharks in the winter months. Current, surf launches and depth demand experience — in return, these rank among Africa's most intense dives. Sharks up close — tiger & bull sharks on one reef.
Westkap · Hiking, Scuba Diving · Best time: Jun–Nov
Whale watching without boarding a boat: from the Cliff Path you watch southern right whales in Walker Bay, often just metres below you. The coastal path runs for kilometres and extends as far as you like; divers also drop onto reefs and kelp forests. The season runs winter to early summer. Land-based whale watching (Jun–Nov) + Cliff Path.

The Royal Cape Yacht Club sits on Duncan Road inside Table Bay harbour. Eight Cape Town boat owners founded it on 5 April 1905 as the Table Bay Yacht Club; the present clubhouse has stood since 9 September 1950. The marina has 386 serviced block-and-chain moorings with fresh water, lighting and 220 V, plus an 18-tonne lift, hardstand, chandlery and a 40-tonne slipway. Vessels over 65 ft LOA or 3 m draught must notify the club in advance. The first transatlantic race from Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro started here in 1971; the club's twilight series run from early August to mid-May, with winter talks and occasional distance races in June and July. Arriving from sea you sign in at the club office first, then take all passports to Immigration at 660 Duncan Road and on to Customs — for a weekend departure the clearance must be done by 14:30 on Friday, as the port closes at 15:00.
KwaZulu-Natal · Running, Ultrarunning · Best time: Apr–Sep
An ultra road route between two cities: roughly 90 km linking Pietermaritzburg and Durban, with the direction alternating each year. The 2027 Down Run starts on Sunday 13 June in Pietermaritzburg and finishes in Durban; every runner gets 12 hours from their own gun start, timed gun to mat. Signposted cut-off points are enforced strictly. Qualifying is done over distances from 42.2 km to 100 km. Outside race day the route is best trained in sections. The limit runs from your own gun start, not the elite start: 12 hours, and missing a cut-off means boarding the bailer bus — qualifying proof has to be submitted by 3 May 2027.
