Surat Thani · Kayaking, Trekking, Snorkeling · Best time: Dec–Apr
One of the world's oldest rainforests, plus the Cheow Lan reservoir with its limestone islands: paddle between karst towers by day, sleep in floating bungalows at night. Jungle immersion without expedition logistics. Cheow Lan Lake with floating bungalow overnight — magical.
Mae Hong Son · MTB, Hiking, Rafting · Best time: Dec–Feb
A backpacker mountain town with honest outdoor surroundings: waterfalls, hot springs and hill trails to tick off by bike or on foot. The approach over 762 curves is part of the legend — once up, the pace stays mellow. Pai Canyon at sunset — narrow ridge, epic view.
Phang Nga · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: Nov–Apr
Granite boulders, walls and Thailand's clearest water: the Similans open only in the dry season, when they rank among the country's best dive grounds. The top sites are easiest reached on a multi-day liveaboard. Open Nov–Apr only — liveaboard for the best spots.
Krabi · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Climbing · Best time: Dec–Apr
Sheer limestone cliffs over turquoise water: reefs and walls with turtles and reef sharks ring Phi Phi, and the climbing hangs right above the sea. Yes, it gets crowded — but early mornings and underwater you find your quiet. Limestone cliffs & reefs — go early before day-trippers.
Krabi · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: Dec–Apr
The laid-back alternative to the party islands — with direct access to Thailand's big southern dive sites: walls, soft corals and a shot at mantas and whale sharks. Long beaches for your surface time come free. Quieter — Hin Daeng/Hin Muang rank among Thailand's best.
Phuket · Surfing, Scuba Diving · Best time: May–Oct
In the wet season Kata becomes Thailand's surf living room: a sandy beach break, small to medium waves and board rental right on the sand. Perfect for your first takeoffs — and outside the wave season Phuket remains a solid dive base. Monsoon surf season May–Oct on the west coast.
Nakhon Ratchasima · Hiking, MTB · Best time: Dec–Feb
Thailand's oldest national park sits just a few hours from Bangkok: hike through grassland and rainforest to waterfalls with a real chance of wild elephants and gibbons. Guides are worth it — they spot what you'd miss. Oldest national park — waterfalls & wildlife.
Surat Thani · Yoga, Scuba Diving · Best time: Mar–Sep
Beyond the full-moon clichés, Phangan is a quiet active island: jungle yoga shalas, still northern bays and dive trips to Sail Rock, one of the Gulf's best sites. Ideal for mixing training and recovery. Beyond the full moon party: quiet bays & yoga retreats.
Krabi · Kayaking, Climbing · Best time: Dec–Apr
A practical base for the Krabi coast: longtail boats leave the beach for Railay, and by sea kayak you thread mangrove channels and slip beneath karst cliffs. More infrastructure than Railay, same scenery. Gateway to Railay — sea kayak through mangroves & caves.
Surat Thani · Scuba Diving, Sailing · Best time: Mar–Sep
A comfort base in the Gulf: from Samui you sail and snorkel through the 42 islands of the Ang Thong marine park, while dive boats head for Sail Rock daily. Full infrastructure at night — training and holiday in balance. Base for Ang Thong Marine Park.
Chiang Mai, Nordthailand · Trail Running, Hiking · Best time: Nov–Feb
Thailand by UTMB brings part of its race week to Doi Inthanon: the Inthanon 20 over 20 km with 800 m of ascent and a 5 km warm-up run with 240 m are held here. The long distances of the same week start elsewhere in the region — Chiang Dao 160 over 173 km with 9,800 m, Elephant 100 over 100 km with 5,500 m, Pagoda 50 over 57 km with 3,600 m, Hmong 50 over 63 km with 3,000 m and Suthep 20 over 26 km with 1,100 m. So if the mountain is why you came, Inthanon gives you a short race and you plan the rest yourself. 2026 dates: 27 November to 6 December. At Doi Inthanon itself Thailand by UTMB only runs the Inthanon 20 and the 5 km warm-up — the week's long distances need a transfer to another corner of the region.
Phuket, Andamanensee · Sailing, Snorkeling, Kayaking · Best time: Nov–Apr
Ao Po Grand Marina in north-east Phuket has 230 berths for vessels up to 499 tons, a minimum depth of 3 m inside and 7 m on the seaward side of the outer docks; it is accessible 24 hours a day with no tidal restriction. From here it is a short hop into Phang Nga Bay and on to the Phi Phi Islands, Ko Racha Yai and Ko Lanta. The dry season from November to April is the travel window, at 24 to 34 °C — the Similan and Surin Islands are reachable only then. Bareboat requires level 2 experience: 10 days or 200 miles as skipper. The Similan and Surin islands are only in range from November to April — outside that window plan for Phang Nga and Phi Phi rather than pencilling in the outer islands and cancelling them.
