Spots in Hungary

Balaton

Transdanubien · SUP, Windsurfing, Cycling, Sailing · Best time: May–Sep

Central Europe's largest lake as a budget water-sports base camp: dependable summer breezes for sailors and windsurfers, warm shallow water for learning SUP, and a full cycling loop around the shore. Each side of the lake has its own character — pick yours. North shore for wind, south shore for flat family SUP.

Budapest

Budapest · Kayaking, Running, Cycling · Best time: Apr–Oct

A Danube metropolis with water access: run the Margaret Island loop, ride along the river and paddle calm side arms — bridges and the Parliament always in view. Afterwards, recover in one of the historic thermal baths. Evening kayak at sunset — Parliament in golden light.

Aggtelek Nationalpark

Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén · Hiking, Trekking · Best time: Apr–Oct

Karst country on the Slovak border: above ground you hike across sinkholes and quiet forests, below waits Baradla, one of Europe's great stalactite caves — tours include an underground concert hall. A destination that shrugs off summer heat. Baradla cave long tour (3h) — more impressive than the short version.

Tisza-See

Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok · Kayaking, Cycling, Fishing · Best time: May–Sep

Hungary's quiet water labyrinth: the lake is threaded with reed islands, water-lily fields and marked kayak trails, ringed by a flat cycling loop. Birdwatchers and anglers share the morning calm here. Tisza Mayfly bloom (June) — millions of mayflies, unique.

Eger / Bükk-Gebirge

Heves · Hiking, MTB, Climbing · Best time: Apr–Oct

Forested mountains above a baroque town: in Bükk National Park, MTB loops roll across karst plateaus, trails lead to crags and caves, and climbers find quiet limestone walls. Afterwards it's wine cellars instead of après-ski — Eger is red-wine country. Cave bath in Miskolctapolca — swimming in a cave.

Velence-See

Fejér · Windsurfing, SUP, Kayaking · Best time: May–Sep

Lake Balaton's little brother, less than an hour from Budapest: shallow, bathtub-warm and far more laid-back than the big lake. The beaches at Agárd and Gárdony have windsurf schools, SUP and kayak rentals plus a wakeboard cable — ideal for learning a watersport from scratch. If you already ride, it's a hassle-free training ground. The lake is only about 1.5 m deep and hits 26–28 degrees in summer — while learning to windsurf you can stand almost everywhere.

Szigetköz

Győr-Moson-Sopron · Kayaking, Cycling, Hiking · Best time: May–Sep

Here the Danube fans out into a green maze of side branches, gravel bars and floodplain forest — Hungary's best paddling territory. The backwaters have barely any current and are doable without experience if you go guided; several villages have rental bases. If you've got the endurance, tack on the 105 km trail to Győr or explore the islands by bike. The full Rajka–Győr water trail runs 105 km — for starters, the calm side branches around Ásványráró are plenty.

Donauknie / Visegrád

Pest · Kayaking, Hiking, Cycling · Best time: Apr–Oct

The most spectacular stretch of the Hungarian Danube, just 40 km from Budapest: climb lookout crags like Prédikálószék in the Visegrád or Börzsöny hills in the morning, then paddle back downstream beneath the castle in the afternoon. Guided hike-and-kayak combos leave straight from Budapest. EuroVelo 6 runs flat through the whole bend — cyclists hop the ferries between banks. The kayak legs run downstream with the current — the only hard part is the climb up Prédikálószék beforehand.

Fertő-See

Győr-Moson-Sopron · Cycling, Kayaking, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Oct

A UNESCO steppe lake on the Austrian border with a pancake-flat 117 km cycling circuit — the Hungarian kilometres between Balf and Fertőrákos run through vineyards overlooking the reed belt and are the quieter part of the loop. In summer you can canoe the reed channels with a national park guide. Perfect terrain for leisure riders and your first long day stage. The circuit is 117 km, only 41 of them on the Hungarian side — the ferries on the east shore let you shortcut as you like.

Mátra-Gebirge

Heves · Hiking, MTB, Skiing · Best time: Apr–Oct

The roof of Hungary: at 1,014 m, Kékestető is the country's highest point, and the loops from Mátrafüred or Mátraháza are punchy but very doable day hikes with views all the way to the Great Plain. MTB trails of every difficulty thread through the whole massif. In winter the summit runs Hungary's longest ski slope — just don't expect the Alps. An elevator inside the TV tower takes you up Kékestető (1,014 m) to the viewing deck — the better way is the loop trail from Mátrafüred.
