Sharjah · Hiking, Paragliding, Sandboarding · Best time: Oct–Apr
Desert hiking over rock studded with 80-million-year-old marine fossils: the Fossil Rock trail takes you 2–3 hours across dunes and rocky ridges, with a few properly steep sections. Afterwards you can paraglide over that exact landscape — or throw yourself down the dunes on a sandboard. All trails and tours start at the Archaeological Centre — that's also where you book a tandem flight at the UAE's first licensed desert paragliding centre.
Sharjah · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Kayaking · Best time: Oct–May
Sharjah's exclave on the Gulf of Oman is the most relaxed way into diving in the Emirates: Shark Island sits a five-minute boat ride offshore, 5 to 16 metres deep, with turtles, rays and moray eels. Martini Rock adds soft corals — and at Al Rafisah reservoir you kayak against a Hajar mountain backdrop. Blacktip reef sharks cruise around Shark Island mainly in the winter months — which is also when visibility peaks.
Ajman · Kayaking, SUP · Best time: Nov–Mar
A million square metres of mangroves in the middle of Ajman, full of flamingos, herons and migratory birds: the guided kayak tour takes you two hours through the channels, totally doable with zero experience. If you like it wobblier, hop on a SUP and glide across the lagoon — half an hour from Dubai, yet it feels like another planet. You can only enter the Ramsar-protected reserve on a guided tour — your best flamingo odds are in the cooler months.

Arabia's safari island: you kayak through mangrove channels and ride guided MTB trails across a reserve with over 11,000 animals — Arabian oryx, giraffes and gazelles included. Everything is guided, everything works without prior experience, but it's a genuine once-in-a-lifetime thing. The ferry from Jebel Dhanna is reserved for resort guests and must be booked 24 hours ahead — without an overnight stay you basically won't get onto the island.

On the edge of the Rub' al Khali, the world's largest sand desert, stand the highest dunes in the Emirates — Moreeb Dune rises around 300 metres. Here you board down properly long slopes instead of tourist mounds, with dune bashing in between and nights at a desert camp under an insanely clear starry sky. In December the Liwa festival with its hill-climb races takes over Moreeb Dune — if you want the dunes to yourself, come before or after.
