The best sport spots and adventures in Cyprus – travel tips, packing lists and first-hand experience from DOMISPORTS.
Paphos · Snorkeling, Hiking, Scuba Diving, MTB · Best time: Apr–Nov
Cyprus's wild corner: no hotel blocks, just gravel tracks, hiking trails and bays like the Blue Lagoon where you jump straight off the rocks into crystal water. By MTB or on foot you reach places no tour boat goes. Blue Lagoon by quad instead of boat — more adventure, fewer tourists.
Troodos · MTB, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Nov
The massif at the island's heart is Cyprus's summer escape: at nearly 2,000 metres you ride and hike through pine forest while the coast bakes below. Long climbs and trail descents make Olympos an honest training mountain. Circle Olympos (1,952m) by MTB — panorama trail.
Paphos · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Kayaking · Best time: Apr–Nov
A classic dive-base area in the west: warm, clear bays for your first breaths underwater — and with the Zenobia, one of the Mediterranean's best-known wrecks sits within day-trip range. In between, kayak routes along the limestone coast. Zenobia Wreck — one of the world's top 10 wreck dives.
Paphos · Hiking, Canyoning · Best time: Apr–Oct
A short gorge with a big payoff: the limestone walls close to within a few metres as you scramble over boulders and wade the streambed. Nothing technical, but a real canyon feel — perfect as a half-day adventure. River crossings — waterproof shoes mandatory.
Famagusta · Kayaking, Snorkeling, Cliff diving · Best time: Apr–Nov
Sea caves, rock arches and deep-blue water: explore the cliff caves by kayak and snorkel right beneath them. The rock platforms are Cyprus's best-known cliff-jumping spot — you choose your height and entry. Kayak sea cave tour from Agia Napa — from ~€30.
Larnaka · Scuba Diving · Best time: Jun–Oct
A 172-metre ro-ro ferry that sank on her maiden voyage in 1980 — today one of the world's top-10 wreck dives, just 1.5 km off Larnaca. Between 16 and 42 m, barracuda and hefty groupers patrol more than 100 trucks still chained to the decks. The outer hull is doable on an Open Water cert; the engine room and cargo holds need Advanced or tec training. The starboard side sits at just 16–18 m — so a standard Open Water cert is enough to dive the wreck.
Famagusta · Snorkeling, Scuba Diving · Best time: May–Oct
200 m off Ayia Napa's Pernera Beach, 93 sculptures by Jason deCaires Taylor stand at 8–10 m depth — an underwater forest slowly growing into an artificial reef. With a mask you already see plenty from the surface; on scuba you float right through the museum. A protected marine area with easy conditions — perfect even for your very first dive. Access is only via licensed dive centres — book ahead, swimming out on your own isn't permitted.
Paphos · Hiking, Trail Running · Best time: Apr–Nov
Deep in the Paphos Forest grow some 130,000 endemic Cyprus cedars found nowhere else on earth. From the picnic site at 1,150 m, the 12 km trail climbs to Tripylos peak at almost 1,400 m — moderate, very doable, with summit views all the way to the Akamas coast. The quiet counterpart to the far busier Troodos trails. Early morning gives you the best chance of spotting one of the mouflon that live in the Paphos Forest.
Larnaka · Kitesurfing, Windsurfing, SUP · Best time: Apr–Oct
Cyprus's kite hotspot and the island's only officially designated kite and windsurf beach — just 15 minutes from Larnaca airport. Reliable winds with flat water or small waves depending on the day; the national kite contests run here too. Two long-established IKO schools right on the spot make getting started easy, and strong-wind days keep advanced riders happy. Kahuna and KiteMed sit right on the beach and rent gear — no need to haul your own kit for getting started.
Limassol · Windsurfing, SUP, Kayaking · Best time: May–Oct
A crescent-shaped, sheltered bay halfway between Limassol and Paphos: flat water and steady westerly wind inside — ideal for learning to windsurf from scratch — with bump-and-jump conditions for advanced riders beyond the bay. The beachfront windsurf centre rents gear and runs lessons. On calm mornings, paddle the cliffs towards Cape Aspro by SUP or kayak. The westerly blows into the bay almost all summer long — you can count on the afternoon thermals.
