5-on-5 Cheat Sheet

The key takeaways for beginners – the 5 positions, the real rules of the game and defensive systems for your first club match.

The 5 positions

PositionJob on the court
1 – Point guardBrings the ball up, distributes passes, sets the tempo – the team's control centre.
2 – Shooting guardHandles distance shooting and scoring, lots of movement without the ball.
3 – Small forwardThe all-rounder between wing and paint, covers both.
4 – Power forwardWorks close to the basket, rebounding and screening for the team.
5 – CenterThe tallest player, anchors the paint, blocks and rebounds close to the rim.

The 3 golden technique rules

Factor 1: Boxing out is assignment, not chance

Concept: Defenders secure about 73% of defensive rebounds, attackers only 27% of their own misses – positioning beats jumping ability. Tip: Everyone boxes out the nearest opponent, regardless of position – contact and a low centre of gravity first, then jump.

Factor 2: Shoot with a system (BEEF)

Concept: In the full-court game the shot often comes after several passes and cuts – without a fixed ritual you leave percentage on the table. Tip: Balance, Eyes (lock the target), Elbow (under the ball), Follow-through – the same routine on every shot, free throw or three.

Factor 3: The shot clock after your own rebound

Concept: After your own offensive rebound the shot clock drops from 24 to just 14 seconds – the mistake beginners underestimate most. Tip: Start counting immediately after every rebound and decide faster – hesitation costs you the possession.

Defensive systems

SystemTrait
Man defenseA fixed matchup, more forced turnovers – ideal for individual development, but costs conditioning.
2-3 zoneWide base formation, covers the paint compactly – vulnerable to open perimeter shots.
3-2 zoneMore pressure on the passing lanes, but weaker close to the rim.
1-3-1 zoneVery aggressive on passing lanes, but full of gaps against good ball movement.
Switch systemsTeams that flex between 3+ defensive systems in-game win significantly more often, per analytics.

Your path into a club team

Injury risk in the full-court game

Pro tip: Keep your fouls under your own quarter number (max 1 in the 1st quarter, max 2 in the 2nd) – the simplest early-warning system against foul trouble and an unplanned trip to the bench.
