Short Track Cheat Sheet

The key takeaways for beginners – cut-resistant gear from day one, the turn as the real race and only one false start allowed.

Protective gear

ItemPriorityTip
Cut-resistant suitHighAt least Coupe-Test level 2 – cuts injury rates from around 10 down to 4.3 percent.
HelmetHighMandatory – several skaters race the same turn within a fraction of a metre of each other.
BladesMediumFixed, offset to the left and curved – a completely different principle from the clap skate.
GlovesMediumPlastic fingertip gliders cut friction when your hand touches the ice in the turn.

Format & getting started

The 3 golden technique rules

Factor 1: The turn is the race

Concept: Over half of every lap is turn, not straight – your race is decided there, not on the short straights. Tip: Train the outside edge in isolation: shifting your weight onto the left outside edge at the transition from straight to turn is the key moment.

Factor 2: Your hand is a tool, not an emergency brake

Concept: Touching down with your fingertips offsets around 2G of centripetal force – the fingertip gliders cut the friction as you do it. Tip: Touch down briefly and under control – as a planned stability tool, not a reflex the moment you start to wobble.

Factor 3: Only one false start is allowed

Concept: The start is explosive, on the tips of the blades, not the full blade length – even touching the blade tip before the gun counts as a violation. Tip: Drill the toe-tip start separately from normal lap skating and react only to the actual gun, never before it.

Race rules

RuleIn short
Outside passAllowed, but costs distance – only worth it if the position gain outweighs the extra distance.
Hip before shoulderOnly move inside once your hip is ahead of your opponent's shoulder.
False startOne false start allowed, the second means immediate disqualification.
Relay tagA directed push from behind, not a soft tap – the last tag must happen before the two-lap mark.

Safety

Pro tip: Measure your progress in the turn, not on the straight: drill single turns in isolation and count how often the outside edge sits clean from the start. Skate only full laps, and you just keep training your mistakes.
