Factor 1: Approach speed is the main driver

Concept: Approach speed explains about 67% of the height differences among world-class vaulters – more than technique or strength alone. Tip: Treat sprint training as its own core block, not a side programme: 6% more speed delivers about 13% more usable energy at the plant.

Factor 2: Actively add energy in the swing-up

Concept: The swing-up transfers the most energy in the entire vault, not the take-off – the pole's stored energy doesn't come back on its own. Tip: Actively pull, swing and extend instead of waiting passively on the pole – only the right sequence turns raw strength into height.

Factor 3: Speed, pole and grip as one system

Concept: The three variables are linked: about 7.6 cm of extra grip height feels like a 2.3 kg softer pole – never change one in isolation. Tip: Set grip height according to speed, and treat a pole change as a reaction to faster approach speed – never the other way round, and never both at once.
