Getting to know the race formats

The 3 golden technique rules

Factor 1: Gybe with speed, never braked

Concept: Entering the turn braked kills lift and makes the gybe much harder to control. Tip: Enter at full speed, pressure on the toe edge, look early into the new direction – more speed means more control.

Factor 2: The exit decides the gybe

Concept: A cleanly carved turn is wasted if getting back into the straps and harness takes too long. Tip: Get back into the straps and harness right after the turn – this transition often costs or wins more than the gybe itself.

Factor 3: Time the start precisely

Concept: Tacking onto starboard too late ruins a clean approach to the start line. Tip: Complete your tack onto starboard about 55–60 seconds before the start – starboard right of way still matters.

Pro tip: Races are won in the gybe, not on the straight. Train your grip as hard as your engine – at 500 newtons of pull, your forearm is usually the bottleneck, not your lungs.
