Steps per minute when running, or pedal revolutions when cycling. For most runners, 170–180 steps per minute sits in the sweet spot.
Cadence is the most honest lever against overstriding. Landing far ahead of your centre of mass with a straight leg brakes every single step and channels impact into the knee. Raising your step rate by 5–10% moves your footstrike back under your hips almost by itself, without consciously fiddling with your foot. One caveat: 180 is a guideline, not a law — taller runners naturally sit lower. Measure your baseline before changing it, and shift it gradually.
