Head-Heaviness & Moment of Inertia (MOI)

How much mass sits in the racket head, measured as moment of inertia (MOI). Add 5 kg·cm² and the head runs about 0.7 m/s slower — yet shuttle speed comes out the same.

What matters

\"Head-heavy means more power\" is the most expensive sentence in the racket aisle. The measurement says the opposite: raise the moment of inertia by 5 kg·cm² and the racket head slows by roughly 0.7 m/s while the contact point drifts further out — yet shuttle speed stays at about 80.5 m/s, because the higher effective mass and the more distal contact point cancel the loss. There is no universal optimum. So the mistake isn't buying the wrong racket, it's believing the racket supplies the power: that comes from internal rotation and the kinetic chain. What often goes unnoticed: a different MOI moves your contact point, so a new racket needs a few sessions of recalibration rather than more force. To start with, a light, slightly head-light frame with a flexible shaft is the most forgiving choice.
