Target Panic

The word for the moment the shot fires you: you release too early, can't bring the sight into the gold, or freeze at full draw.

What matters

Target panic isn't a beginner's problem — it typically hits archers who already score well and start forcing the perfect moment. Around 90 percent of dedicated archers meet it sooner or later. On a compound the most common trigger is the trigger punch: consciously pressing the release instead of slowly building tension until the shot breaks as a surprise. The thinking trap is treating it as weak willpower and simply wanting it harder — which is exactly what feeds it. What helps is taking the scoring pressure away: blank bale rounds with no aiming point, on compound a switch to a hinge or tension release, in barebow deliberate command shooting. And what often goes unnoticed: target panic wears several faces. Releasing too early and freezing off the gold look like opposites, but they are the same pattern.
