No Man's Land

The zone between the net and the baseline. You are too far back to volley and too far forward for deep balls, so you spend as little time there as you can.

What matters

The name says it all: in no man's land every ball catches you at the wrong moment. If it comes deep, you have to scrape it up in a hurry; if it comes short, you are too far away to volley. Still, the zone is not forbidden, it is a corridor — you pass through it, you do not live in it. In padel that means moving up together after every deep shot, because the points are won at the net, and among pros net effectiveness predicts the outcome of the match. In pickleball the same zone carries the same name, except the two-bounce rule already forces you back to the baseline at the start of every point. The typical mistake is simply freezing there out of indecision. Commit: either all the way back to the baseline, or all the way up to the net or kitchen line.
