Committed

The word for having fully decided before a move. A half-hearted yes in mid-air is more dangerous than the jump itself.

What matters

\"Are you committed?\" gets asked at every spot and explained at none. It means the decision happens before the move, not halfway through it. Physically that matters because a jump you abort mid-flight loses exactly the momentum the landing needs. Psychologically it matters more: in a survey of 277 practitioners, reckless risk-taking tracked with high neuroticism and low conscientiousness, and self-efficacy mediated that relationship. Translated: what protects you isn't courage, it's a trained belief in your own competence. The usual thinking error is treating committed as a synonym for brave. Being committed just as much means calmly saying no beforehand. And the honest limit: resolve is no substitute for ability. Mark the distance on flat ground and jump it there first, before you take it up to height.
