Park SMART, formerly “Smart Style”, comes from the National Ski Areas Association and is now the international reference framework for park safety. The reason parks need their own rules is uncomfortable: research suggests park injuries tend to be more severe than injuries on ordinary pistes — more often head, face and back, more often ending in a hospital transport. The typical mistake is assuming that piste competence carries over. Features are graded XS to XL just like slopes, and you start at the smallest size no matter how cleanly you carve. Scope every feature from the side first — approach, takeoff point, landing — and ride them one at a time. What often gets missed: features marked with a cross or tape are closed because the landing isn't prepared.
