Edge Change

Switching from heel edge to toe edge or back — the moment where most snowboard crashes happen.

What matters

The edge change is the critical phase because the board lies flat on the snow for a moment and nothing grips — catch an edge there and you're thrown instantly. The key is making the change actively and briskly rather than hesitating: weight briefly onto the front foot, eyes and shoulders into the new direction, then deliberately build the new edge. Hesitation is precisely the error — leave the change sitting in the fall line and you accelerate flat and lose control. Second point: your eyes lead the movement. Look at your edge or your feet and your body goes there. To practise, use gentle slopes and deliberately small, quick changes rather than long drawn-out turns.
