Turnout

The outward rotation of the legs. On average about 60 percent comes from hip external rotation, with only 20 to 30 percent contributed by the ankle.

What matters

Turnout is the number ballet cheats on most – and it's the knees and ankles that pay the bill. Force a wider \"V\" than your hip actually gives and you screw the rest out through the foot and knee. That compensated turnout was linked to lower-limb injuries in three out of four studies. The honest self-test happens face down: bend one knee to 90 degrees and let the lower leg fall loosely inward – however far it drops is your passive hip external rotation. Anything beyond that standing up is compensation. What almost nobody knows: normative values for turnout still don't exist. So compare yourself with your own control, not with the barre next to you.
