Rip

The gym word for torn palms from bar, rings or parallel bars. Not a badge of honour, but what friction, sweat and uneven callus do together.

What matters

\"I ripped\" gets said in every gym and explained in none, even though it's the most common reason someone can't touch a bar for days. The usual trigger is an edge: thick, overgrown callus catches on the bar and tears the skin underneath with it — but palms that are too soft tear just as readily, and sweat makes either worse. That makes regular filing the actual prevention, not letting calluses build. Chalk dries the hand and improves grip, but only thin and even on dry skin: caked on thick it turns into a slick layer and makes your grip worse. Grips spread the friction between skin and bar rather than removing it, and loose grips rub more, not less. Clean and cover a fresh rip before you carry on training: open palms on a bar everybody grabs are a hygiene question as much as a healing one.
