Pop (Freestyle Take-off)

The take-off every freestyle trick starts with — not a jump off your legs but a lever built from hard edge pressure and a sharp pull on the sail. The board's full tail supplies the counter-pressure.

What matters

No pop, no Vulcan, no Spock, no Flaka — every rotation begins with this one move. The typical mistake is treating it as a jump: pull yourself up with straight legs and you get almost no height while losing the control you need for the landing. What works is a compact stance — weight over the board, knees bent, boom close to the body — and out of it a short, hard press through the tail and windward rail while you sheet in with a sharp tug. The water's counter-pressure levers you up; you are not jumping. Practise lifting just the tail first, with no rotation in mind, or you'll be learning two things at once and neither properly. What often gets missed: the landing. Touch down with bent knees and pick the sail's pull straight back up — braking abruptly is a well-known trigger for the catapult crash.
