Drishti (Gaze Point)

A deliberately chosen, motionless point where your eyes rest during a pose. Vision is one of your strongest balance sensors – fix it and the wobble settles.

What matters

When you start wobbling in a balance, it's almost always the eyes that drift first and the body that follows. Drishti reverses that: you glue your gaze to a motionless point – in standing balances, roughly two metres ahead of you on the floor – and the wobble noticeably calms down. Test the difference deliberately: hold a standing scale once letting your eyes roam, once with them fixed. Two things kill the effect: looking over at your neighbour's mat, and hard staring with screwed-up eyes, because tension in the face travels into the whole body. One detail people miss: in backbends lift the gaze only slightly, never throw the head back. With neck trouble, keep the drishti straight ahead.
