“My draw shoulder has been aching every session for a few months now — am I doing something wrong?” Not necessarily wrong — you're right in the middle of a very typical recurve pattern. In a study of competitive archers, 54.4% had current shoulder pain, and lifetime prevalence hit 82.69% — in plain terms: more than four out of five experienced club members know this ache from their own experience, sooner or later.
And it doesn't hit just any shoulder at random: 41% of those affected felt it specifically in the draw shoulder — exactly the shoulder that holds your full draw weight with zero relief on every single shot (remember Guide 1: no let-off, no shortcuts). But in recurve, overuse also shows up in a second, very distinct spot: your finger flexor tendons. Studies show that archers using an Olympic-style bow — recurve — tend to develop thickening of these tendons, while compound archers are more often affected in the upper arm and shoulder. The reason is simple: you release with your fingers, not a mechanical trigger.

Without let-off, you hold the full draw weight on every single shot — shot after shot, session after session, without the relief a compound bow gives at full draw. That repeated full load concentrates almost always on the same side: the draw shoulder, exactly where 41% of archers with shoulder pain actually feel it.
An uneven finger hook on the tab — where one finger carries more draw force than the other two — overloads that one tendon while its neighbors stay unloaded. Over weeks, that adds up to exactly the tendon thickening seen more often in recurve archers than compound archers.
Swelling on the back of the hand, pain when gripping, a slight pull along the extensor tendons — these are typical early signs of tenosynovitis, one of the most common overuse diagnoses in competitive archery. The earlier you react, the shorter the break you'll need afterward.
Unlike the shoulder and fingers, a bow-arm injury is usually acute, not gradual: release sloppily or skip the arm guard, and the string snaps back onto your forearm at full force on the recoil — no cam damping like on a compound. Interesting detail from the study: raw arrow count per training day — around 145 arrows on average, a perfectly normal volume for competitive sport — barely differed between archers with pain and without. Two other factors mattered far more: a previous injury raised the risk 2.57-fold, young age 2.13-fold — meaning: if you've had trouble before, be extra careful coming back, not just pick up where you left off.
Pain that outlasts a single session or comes with swelling isn't a sign of weak discipline — it's a stop signal. Because a previous injury more than doubles your risk for the next one, easing back in especially carefully after a break pays off — better to spend two extra weeks building up slowly than to reinforce the same pattern again.
Make shoulder-stability and rotator-cuff exercises a fixed weekly appointment, not something you only do once it hurts. Ten minutes of external rotation with a light resistance band, two to three times a week, is one of the cheapest injury-prevention measures in all of recurve — and you don't even need a bow for it.
