Why does your groin ache more than your calves after a hard slalom session? The honest answer: freestyle slalom loads your body structurally differently than straight skating. Wide stances in Grapevine and sitting tricks, constant internal and external hip rotation, plus tight spins — that's a completely different demand profile than the steady push of distance skating.
The data on inline skating fall risk overall is clear: wrist injuries are among the most common injuries in the sport, because the body reflexively throws its hands forward when a fall threatens. That's exactly why the evidence for wrist guards is so strong: properly fitted guards demonstrably and clearly lower the risk of a wrist injury. In slalom, where learning new spin and balance tricks puts you off balance more often than average, this rule applies doubly.
The second construction site is flexibility, not strength. Wide stances like the Grapevine or deep crouches like Sitting Fish demand hip mobility that few beginners bring along — it has to be built, not assumed.
Before every session: dynamic hip circles, lunges with rotation, side leg swings. The goal isn't maximum stretch but preparing the hips for the upcoming movement directions — static stretching before training does less here than active mobilization.
The inner thigh muscles (adductors) work in every wide-stance movement — in the Grapevine just as much as in wide sitting positions. Strengthening exercises like lateral lunges or Cossack squats build exactly the stability that stretching alone doesn't provide.
Look for a firm but not rigid splint on the inside that limits backward flexion of the wrist — exactly the movement that leads to fracture in a typical forward fall. A guard that only pads the palm without stabilizing it delivers far less protection.
After training, once the muscles are warm, comes static stretching of hip flexors, adductors and calves. This phase — not the warm-up beforehand — is the right moment for longer, held stretches.
Pulling pain in the groin that persists for several days isn't "normal soreness" but a warning sign of early adductor overload. In that case, deliberately reduce your stance width instead of training through it.
Wrist guards demonstrably lower the risk of serious wrist injuries — wear them consistently, especially in phases where you're learning new spin or balance tricks. No guard makes you invulnerable, but it changes how a fall ends.
Build hip and adductor training in as a fixed component, not as a reaction to symptoms you already feel. Slalom-specific flexibility is prevention, not an optional extra.
Build in a pure 10-minute mobility session, 2 to 3 times a week, without skates — hip circles, Cossack squats, lateral lunges. This small investment pays off in noticeably more control during Grapevine and sitting tricks.
A detail almost nobody checks: replace your wrist guards once the splint feels bent or worn out. An old guard gives you a false sense of security without still offering real protection.
