Wheel hardness and rockering aren't nerd talk: they decide your grip, comfort and agility in the city. Here's how to dial in your setup properly.
"Does fiddling with wheel hardness and rockering actually do anything, or is that pure nerd talk?" The honest answer: for the city, it makes a measurable difference. Your wheel hardness is rated on the Shore A scale, from soft to hard — and it directly determines how much grip and comfort you get on rough asphalt.
For context: a 78A wheel feels underneath you like a thicker car tire — forgiving, grippy, comfortable. A 90A+ wheel is more like a skateboard wheel: hard, fast, but every single pebble in the pavement reports straight back into your ankle.

Most skates ship with a compromise setup out of the box — good enough for most riders, but rarely optimal for your specific city with its specific surface. Once you understand what each dial actually does, you never have to guess again.
The number followed by "A" (e.g., 82A) is usually stamped on the side of the wheel. That's your starting point for any adjustment — without that value, you're guessing at which direction even makes sense.
78 to 82A suits cracked, rough city asphalt and cobblestones — more grip, more comfort, at the cost of faster wear. 84 to 85A is the hybrid all-rounder for mixed routes. 85A and up pays off on smooth bike paths and at higher speed, but costs you grip — especially in the wet, as you already know from the surfaces guide.
With rockering, you raise the outer wheels (front/back) by about 2 mm so that mainly the middle wheels touch the ground — similar to the curved profile of an ice skate blade, also called a "banana rocker". The result: noticeably more agility for dense pedestrian traffic and tight corners, because less urethane resists your turning motion.
The catch with heavy rockering: it costs you stability and efficiency in a straight line. For pure fitness cruising over distance, a flat frame usually remains the better choice. Only when your route is genuinely obstacle-dense — narrow alleys, lots of pedestrians, frequent direction changes — does a light 1 to 2 mm rocker on the outer wheels pay off.
Wheels wear unevenly — usually first on the inner edge, since most push-off force lands there. Rotate them regularly (inside to outside, front to back) to extend their life, and replace them once the tread noticeably flattens or loses its round shape.
A rough rule of thumb for high-mileage riders: with regular city use, check the tread roughly every few weeks — that way you catch the replacement before ride feel noticeably degrades.
Test every new setup — new wheels, new hardness, fresh rockering — carefully and slowly on familiar terrain before you ride it at your usual top speed. Changed handling otherwise catches you off guard exactly when you can least afford it.
Experienced city skaters like a mixed setup: slightly softer wheels on the inside for more push-off grip, slightly harder ones on the outside for durability. This trick originally comes from the speed-skating world, but works for fitness cruising too — without you needing to run a full speed setup.
For cracked, rough asphalt and cobblestones, 78 to 82A is ideal — more grip and comfort at the cost of durability. For smoother bike paths and more speed, 84 to 85A works as a good all-round compromise.
Rockering slightly raises the outer wheels so mainly the middle wheels touch the ground — that makes tight turns noticeably easier. For pure distance cruising, though, you pay for it with stability and efficiency.
That depends on terrain and hardness — softer wheels wear faster than hard ones. Check the tread regularly for flattening and rotate the wheels to slow down uneven wear.
Hard wheels roll more efficiently on smooth ground but quickly lose that edge on rough pavement due to reduced grip. On typical city asphalt, the grip loss often completely cancels out the speed advantage.
