Doesn't strength training make me slow and stiff as a karateka? The honest answer: no — done right, strength training makes you more explosive, not stiffer, and it's one of the best-documented performance levers in combat sport. A systematic review of 20 studies with 504 combat athletes shows significant gains in maximal strength, explosive power, flexibility, balance and strength endurance — in karate especially in balance and jump power.
What matters is what karate itself can and can't do. In beginners, karate produces large effects on lower-body power (effect size around 1.04) and flexibility (around 0.80) — that's a lot. But it has no notable effect on endurance (VO2max). Translated: karate builds explosiveness and flexibility, your conditioning you have to train separately.

Your hip rotation is only as strong as the trunk that transmits it. Train the core not just for holding (planks) but for rotation and anti-rotation — woodchopper movements, Pallof press, medicine-ball rotational throws. The core is the hinge of your kinetic chain.
