The spin technique versus the glide: more power potential, more risk — who the switch actually pays off for – technique, common mistakes and a practical tip.
The honest answer first: the spin technique isn't an upgrade that automatically throws farther — it's a technique swap with higher potential, but also higher risk. Instead of gliding backward in a straight line, you rotate almost fully around the circle, similar to a discus throw, before you put.
Here's what the biomechanics show: compared to the glide, spin athletes generate significantly greater separation between shoulder and hip in the power position — this stored elastic tension in the core muscles can release enormous extra power with perfect timing. The catch: that exact timing is considerably more technically demanding than in the glide, and average release velocity across many athletes is still higher for the glide.
Even so, the spin technique is increasingly becoming the dominant technique among men, while the glide remains the most common technique among women. The reason isn't that one technique is "better" — it comes down to body type, coordination ability, and how much training time you can invest to master the extra complexity.
Instead of gliding backward in a straight line, you start bladed at the back of the circle and rotate through almost a full turn across the middle before landing in the same power position as in the glide. The path there is completely different; the target — a strong, low push position — stays the same.
Stand with your back to the sector but bladed to the side at the rear of the circle, weight on your pivot leg. The shot sits correctly at your neck, elbow out to the side-back — nothing changes here compared to the standing put or glide.
The turn begins with a controlled hip rotation, not the arm or shoulder. The upper body initially lags behind the hip — that exact delay creates the torsion that later delivers the extra power.
A common beginner mistake is a too-wide, uncontrolled spin with the arm extended — that raises the fall risk and makes the landing imprecise. Keep the shot close to your body throughout the entire spin, almost like a figure skater pulling their arms in to spin faster.
At the end of the spin, in the power position, the torsion between hip and shoulder is at its maximum tension. Now you fire the leg-hip-shoulder-arm chain as usual — except now the stored rotational energy flows in as well.
The spin technique noticeably raises the risk of falling or fouling compared to the glide, because more rotational axes have to be controlled at once. Practice the first few weeks entirely without the shot or with a light substitute weight, until the turn runs securely and without loss of balance.
Pay special attention to knee and ankle loading during the rotation — poor technique here creates lateral shear forces that load differently than the linear glide movement. Never practice the spin technique under time pressure or fatigue.
Practice the spin completely without the shot and in slow motion first, with a deliberate pause in the power position to feel the landing before speed is added. Only once the landing sits perfectly in slow motion do you increase the speed.
A trick many coaches use: compare both techniques over several weeks using your actual competition distances, not how they feel. Some athletes feel stronger with the spin but actually put farther with the glide — only numbers show that honestly.
